Caffeine can cause dehydration

I drink one cup of coffee every morning. Right after surgery I stopped for a while, but started up again after 6 weeks or so. I don't drink soda or anything else with caffeine other than my one cup. I haven't had any issues.

It is a diuretic so cab dehydrate. Also an irritant, so beginning stages of recovery means it can bother your healing stomach.

That said, I have a cup of coffee every now & then, but mostly stick to Decaf. I am 6 months out & my doc says typically none before this.

The dehydrating effects is the reason. It's really hard to stay hydrated after surgery.

You can have caffeine, just in moderation and with plenty of Water.

According to my surgeon, Caffeine restricts blood vessels and can interfere with healing from surgery.

When I saw my NUT for my 3 month post-op visit, she said that new guidelines had just been published and said that 16 ounces a day of caffeine is now allowed. I don't drink coffee every day but it's nice to have a cup on a cold rainy morning and not worry about it. Bubbles are still out though, so no soda with caffeine.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
