Kentucky, "who's your Doctor"

Recommended Posts

I’m scheduled to be banded on 4/10 by Dr. Shina at Norton Suburban in Louisville. Thinking of these last weeks is stressing me out I have to change some of my meds 21 days before surgery and not sure what Dr. needs to do that. I’m also getting concerned about fat on my liver I was Ok with it till someone who works in my building said they know a person who didn’t get banded because of liver size.

JayTee, stay on your scheduled diet and stop worrying. I don't know what meds you are on but I do know some meds cause thinning of the blood or other issues. The doctor is ensuring your health. As for your fatty liver, that is why the doctor places you on a diet prior to surgery, does not take much for the liver to shrink, stay on course and look forward. Surgery was a breeze, just remember to get out of that bed and walk, walk, walk. Even before the nurse comes in and reminds you to. Good luck!!

Thanks Busy.

I have my PreOp this Thursday 3/12 and I'm sure they will let me know what diet and for how long they want me to do. I see Cardo and Pulimnary Dr's on Monday 3/16 if my meds aren't changed by any of those 3 appointments then I'll get a hold of my PCP. Only one month from tomorrow till my surgery:ohmy:

I live across the bridge & had it done at Clark Memorial by Dr. McMillian. Staff & hosp. were great. They have a program with a bariatric coordinator who you see weekly to help you for the first 12 weeks. They also have monthly support groups. Good luck & look around.

Dr. Shina did my band in 10-08 at St Catherine Hospital in Charlestown IN, He is an excellent surgeon, however he does have a brash bedside manner,I have absolutely no regrets from using him even though a complilcation with surgery because I had to be opened up due to previous scar tissue(not related to the band) almost killed me, I live in Madisonville,KY and have to travel to Charlestown(200miles) to get my fills is the only (if any) drawback. Feel free to contact me with any questions / concerns you may have at cproctor501@newwavecomm.net , Oh BTW i have lost about 65 lbs since 10-14-08 but am currentally stuck with 2 fills equaling 7cc's. I cant eat hardley anything unless I chew chew chew chew it up good, I also have a problem not drinking with my meals, I am still working on that. Holler at me if ya want!

Thanks cproctor. I had my presurgery labs and class today asked them about the liver thing and the nutritionist and nurse said if we weren't told to do one we don't have to worry but we may want to start cutting carbs. I'm thinking of starting to replace a meal with a carb frendily shake to try and help that. Yes I ws prewarned about Dr Shina's deminor he is very frank but I really liked him.

Dr Shina did my surgery at Suburban in October. I have lost 28 lbs so far. I don't agree with his fill policy. He will only do a fill every 8 weeks and he means for you to follow his rules, which are no carbs and 2 ounce meals, three times a day. He is very assertive and says absolutely no carbs. His bedside manner is not great, but he seems to be a good surgeon. He could be a little more compassionate, since he tells you in the seminars how overweight he is. I would like to get fills every month until I hit my sweet spot. I have had two fills in 4 months. Does the dr. in Elizabethtown take outside patients for fills? How often will he do a fill? Any one know of a dr. near Louisville who does fills once a month and will take a patient for fills?

If you want to have some fun with him mention my name as being a friend (Chris Proctor), then say I hope you dont make that mistake twice, LOL watch him turn blue..........He tells me I had the most difficult surgery to date for him, and I am the ONLY patient that had any complications from surgery, I really liked Jo, Tammy and Dr. Shina, they are all class acts.

Yeah, you gotta admire him though, he got the hospital to work well with me on the "added" expense I incurred cause I had to stay 8 days, 6 of those in intensive care cause of my complications, however I went back after 10 weeks and he put in 3cc's, then I went back 7 weeks later and I got him to put in 4cc's more putting me at 7cc's and restricted well.......more so in the mornings but I do ok, im down 65lbs since 10-14-08 but I lost allot while I was recovering at home, I actually left the hospital 5 lbs heavier than when I came in, they said because of all the I V fluids,,,,,anyway good to hear from some fellow shina peeps. holler if you need anything:eek::thumbup::eek::thumbup:

He definitely wants you to do what he says. He is the boss! What are you doing to result in so much weightloss? I need some tips...help, please

Well my surgery was a bear, I spent 10 weeks recovering at home and thats when I lost the lions share of my weight, I had to be opened completely up instead of laproscopic surgery due to scar tissue from a previous surgery, I have been trying to do a little Atkins dieting, just eating small amounts of meat and eggs and such, Pork rinds make a good snack just remember to chew chew chew. Good luck on your continued success.

I'm glad to hear from some Dr. Shina patients He was definitely up front about what he expects you to eat...."meat and fish, meat and fish sometimes eggs, sometimes peanut butter".... I liked that rule easy to follow. But as I got to thinking of Breakfast sometimes eggs means once or maybe twice a week, may not be an issue since some people say they can't eat till midday anyway. I was wondering what ti a typical menu for my fellow Dr. Shina patients?

Well, yesterday I had 3 strips of bacon and coffee for breakfast. The precooked kind you can put in the microwave at work, and they aren't very thick. For lunch I had a lean cuisine, but I couldn't and didn't have the corn/peas mixture in it. At 4:00 I had a no sugar added instant breakfast (Kroger brand) with 2% milk for a Protein snack. For dinner, I had one piece of fish and one hushpuppie (forbidden, but good). I drink only Water at work, except for protein snack, which helps to get the water in. At home I have Decaf iced tea. It has only been this way since my second fill last Tuesday. Before that I was hungry and ate more food. Be ready for that...the hunger. It happens and if you know about it in advance you won't think something is wrong with you. Just try to keep your protein in and the water. Hope this helps.

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.
