Calling Vegan BariatricPal Members: Which Protein Powder Do You Use?

Recommended Posts

No matter how much you want to get your nutrients from “real foods,” you may not be able to, especially if you get the gastric sleeve or bypass. There may be a few days pre-op and several days or a few weeks post-op when you depend on Protein powders and shakes to hit your protein numbers.

There are a million different low-sugar, high-protein powders and shakes out there, but your choices are way more limited if you’re vegan. You may go for pea or hemp or soy Protein powder, but there aren’t that many choices.

My question for you is: which brand(s) and flavor(s) do you use, and where do (or did) you buy them?

I used to buy Biochem vegan Protein Powder. I bought it from Whole Foods. I also like Orgain Organics RTD. They are sold online at their website and in stores like Walgreens and CVS.

Thanks for the responses! We've received quite a bit of interest in when and soy free items in our BariatricPal Store.

How about vegan Protein bars and other vegan Protein foods?

Also, what do you look for in a vegan supplement? Do you prefer pea powder? Hemp Protein? All-natural flavorings? And do you find it easy to get these powders at your local supermarket, or do you go online? Thanks for your answers!

I'm looking for minimal ingredients. I like pea Protein but hemp is a little higher in protein. No gmo's is a plus. Orgain RTD is available in Walgreens, Rite Aid, etc... I've seen the Orgain powder in GNC & Vitamin Shoppe. Whole Foods has a wide variety of vegan powders ( Vega, Raw, Biochem). I've seen hemp hearts sold in Target. I'm interested in trying Bobs Red Mill powders but as far as I can tell only sold on their website

I mostly buy Kind or Larabars. All the Kind and some of the Larabars are vegan. Overall I'm not a big Protein Bar gal

Clif Builder Bars (20g) are vegan and available at most grocery stores. I also like Barre bars but they have limited availability and only 10 grams of protein, great in a pinch but a but expensive. I love chia bars but they are low in protein.

Honestly those are the only ones I use.

It's important for me to be able to read what's in it and low is sugar. My preferences are pea Protein and brown rice. I like the mix in Plant fusion which includes quinoa, amaranth and pea protein. I'm not a fan of hemp as it gives me stomach issues. I prefer the flavoring be natural but that's not always possible in powders.

I usually order my protein via the internet, Jet.com, Amazon.com or directly from the manufacturers site. Protein is available at local stores, Target, Harris Teeter, Giant, GNC, Vitamin Shoppe but I find the pricing to be higher than online.

What I'm looking for is NO STEVIA!

I'll be starting a 10-day pre-op liquid only, high-Protein, low-carb diet soon. I've tried every vegan Protein powder that I can find in sample packs. All of them make me gag. They are way too sweet and sweetened with stevia, which I just can't stand. All of them are pretty grainy, too, though I can actually handle that better than the flavor.

My ideal flavored vegan protein supplement would contain:

- Minimal ingredients (most have all kinds of veg & fruit additives, which affects flavor and increase the chances of allergies).
- Sweetened with a mixture of fructose, xylitol or ertythritol, and Monk Fruit to get a natural low-glycemic sweetness without too much sugar alcohols. No stevia.
- Not overly sweet! You can always add sweetener if desired, but once it's in there you can't take it out!
- Available in chocolate, vanilla, & berry favors.
- Dissolves well without a heavy grainy texture.
- Has at least 15 g protein and no more than 8 carbs per serving

With plant based powders I strongly advise using a nutra bullet or similar device. The only one I ever tried that was not at least a little gritty was Biochem vegan

I suggest using a Nutrabullet or a similar device with any Protein powders. It's almost impossible to get it to a decent consistency with a spoon or even a shake bottle.

Just wanted to add Naked Pea Protein 27 grams of Protein. I bought it from Amazon 5 pounds (76 servings) for about $54. The great thing is since it has no sweeteners it can be used in sweet and savory dishes.

The pea protein I used before was awfully expensive.

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
