Newbie looking for a buddy

Recommended Posts

Hi , I'm new too. My surgery was 09/02/15. I understand having to watch everyone else eat around you! I went to a funeral just when I started my purée diet and when we went to the dinner the was all this good food and Desserts around me and I'm sitting there with my Protein Shake and applesauce trying with all my might to be strong. Not to mention everyone around was looking at me wondering why I was eating like that. Then I went to shake up my Protein shake and forgot to close the lid and it went flying everywhere! Lol Yes, it's been quite a challenge. Having diarrhea off and on and trying to get in all my medicine five minutes apart with my Vitamins and 60 grams of protein and 64 oz of Water a day is quite the challenge. Plus, trying to walk when your still hurting. Someone please tell me it gets easier? I've been walking when I can. One day I stepped on the scale and it said I gained three pounds. But I'm back down. I want to be a star with this!! I want to succeed!

Hi! I too will need people to connect with! Let's do it. My surgery is on Oct. 6th in North Carolina.

So how are things with you so far? Have you packed your bag? Any other items we can discuss will be great! I'm on my 2 week Protein shakes currently. I've read others having different pre op diets... What about you?

Prayers as you prepare for this wonderful change in your life. I am 59 and am a retired kindergarten teacher! Share anytime

My surgery was also 9/2!!! I think it will get easier...all we can do is take one day at a time, stay off the scale and listen to our bodies. ❤

Another Newbie here...I mainly lurk but just today was asked to find a support group so here I am ???? I had GB with RNY on 8/28/15 at UCSF. Man has this been a wild ride! I spent 2 days in the hospital, had 7 incision sites but no drains. The pain was UNREAL!!!! In addition to being overweight, I also have Fibromyalgia and a Chronic Persistent Headache. I've had this dang headache for over 3 years now and we can't find it's cause. Prior to surgery, I was on Oxycodone and Nucynta for my Fibro and Headache pain. Post surgery, I had to switch to a Fentynal patch and the liquid Vicodin (Hyceth sp?). Neither really touch my Fibro or Headache pain but did help somewhat with the surgical pain. I'm also supposed to be taking a Fibro drug called Gabapentin but when crushed, is so bitter that I gag trying to get it down so I've just stopped taking it. Same goes for my antidepressant Lexapro... Bitter, Bitter, Bitter! Because of my on going health issues, the weight isn't falling off as fast as I'd hoped and I'm really upset about it. This whole process has been maddening. My surgery was originally scheduled for 7/31 but I got bitten by a spider on my abdomen so my surgeon postponed the surgery. I was to remain on the liquid diet though so I've basically been dieting since 7/17. Since 7/17, I have only lost 42 lbs ????. I know I should be happy but I really thought I'd have lost more by now. On a happier note, My surgery pain is finally gone, that's been a definite plus. That pain was unreal!!! Anyway, enough about me, I'm just glad to have found you guys. I signed up for Bariatric Pal a year ago when I had started this journey but haven't been back much since then.

Keep up the good work everyone ????

Hi..I need a gastric bypass buddy too. I feel alone in this. I have a wonderful husband of 21 years and 3 sons, my parents and friends, but they can't truly understand what I am going through. My surgery was 9/23/15. Tomorrow will be 3 weeks. My surgery lasted 6 1/2 hours because of adhesions and a hiatal hernia. I'm still hurting physically but dealing with this emotionally is much harder than I expected. Btw...I live in Richmond, VA.

I'd like a buddy too. I'm doing this all alone. Not even telling anyone. So yeah, I'm a little nervous. My date is 10/26/15. Very excited to just get on with it too.

I wasn't required to do a preop diet. I did try it a few times but I keep cheating! :( I'm one week before surgery so I'm trying again tomorrow. wish me luck.

I'm doing a sleeve - did I post in the wrong spot?

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I had about 6 months between deciding to do surgery and getting scheduled. I came across the book The Pound of Cure by Dr. Matthew Weiner, a bariatric surgeon in Arizona, and started to implement some of the changes he recommended (and lost 13 lbs in the process without ever feeling deprived). The book is very simple, and the focus is on whole, plant based foods, but within reason. It's not an all or nothing approach, or going vegan or something, but focuses on improvement and aiming for getting it right 80-90% of the time. His suggestions are divided into 12 sections that you can tackle over time, perhaps one per month for a year if a person is just trying to improve nutrition and build good habits. They range from things like cutting out artificial sweetener or eating more beans to eating a pound of vegetables per day. I found it really effective pre-surgery and it's an eating style I will be working to get back to as I am further out from surgery and have more capacity. Small changes you can sustain will do the most for building good habits for life.

That sounds awesome. I'll have to check that out thanks!

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
