Hello All!

I was wondering if there's anyone out there who had high BMI and had great success with the sleeve? I am 433 pounds and will be having the sleeve. My surgeon suggests having the sleeve and later down the road if I wanted I could get the bypass.

Anyone?

Me! I've been reviewing my records since my 1 year f/u is on Monday. I thought my BMI was high 60's but it was actually 73. It can be done, but keep in mind you will likely need at least 2 years to reach goal. It's takes dedication and determination.

This morning was one of those days I had to talk myself into going to the gym, but I made it there. I'm in this for the long run, come hell or high Water.

I am, but am not nearly as far along as @Blerdgirl. I don't know if I am far along enough to be considered successful or not, but I am very happy with my progress.

Thank you for your reply! I didn't think mine was high..but it's 67

I was able to lose weight before under my Dr's supervision. I know this tool will help me get to where I want to be.

Congrats to you for all your accomplishments so far :)

@innersurfergirl

I am sure you are considered a success. When did you have the surgery

Congrats to u also :)

My starting weight was 414, but I'm really short. 5'2" - 5'3" depending on who's measuring.

I was sleeved April 20th of this year.

WOW and you have lost over 140 pounds in 5 months? Did you have a supervised diet before surgery? If so how much did you lose and was it a 6 month supervised diet?

I am currently in the middle of my 6 month supervised diet and will see the Dr again next Monday. So far I have lost 20 pounds however lost 145 pounds on my own before the initial Dr consultation in June.

No, I didn't have a supervised diet. I met with my nutritionist but there was no requirement. I just tried not to gain. I did adjust my diet pre-op by weaning myself off of caffeine and pop, increasing my Water, and trying to eat cleaner and focus on Protein.

My BMI was 61 at my first appointment. Not my highest weight though. I had the sleeve surgery. I'm now 5 months post-op and I'm down to 45.5 right now. I don't think I'm dropping weight super fast, but I follow my plan and exercise regularly. It's coming off steadily though. My diabetes is in remission and I feel better than I have in 10 yrs. I'm only half way to my goal, but I see light at the end of this tunnel.

My highest was a BMI of 50 and a weight of 370 lbs. I lost 115 lbs since May 12, about 4 months. I still got about 85 lbs or so to go until I reach my goal. I would advise to talk to your doctor and see what surgery would be best for you.

We have almost the same starting point. I started at 343. I'm also 5' 7". Keep moving forward! You are almost there! The process is certainly a test of patience.

My BMI is 57, the last time I was weighed I tipped the scale at 409, and I'm 5'11". I decided to do the sleeve after doing lots of research. I have talked with several people who have lost over 200 lbs with just the sleeve. I have talked to those who had the bypass revision after being sleeved. I made the personal choice to go with the sleeve because I fear some of the effects of the bypass. If I need to do it in the future, it will still be a possibility, but I would like to try without the need of rerouting my gastric system.

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
