Had Surgery on September 8th 2015

Recommended Posts

I had my sleeve done on 9/9 and I had a hernia as well. It is going ok so far. The gas pains were what was killing me but I took some Phazyme and I feel so much better. I have been walking and taking in a lot of fluids. I even cooked Spaghetti and Fried Fish food my family two nights ago. Was not hungry or had the urge to taste. I had my Mom taste the Spaghetti sauce for me. I am quite sure that would have tore my stomach up...

I still have some pain but have decided that it may be the stitch in my diaphragm or the stitch pinning my stomach to my abdominal wall. They said I will feel the stomach stitch release in a couple of weeks. It seems to hurt on my left side. Did they do the same to you?

Hello,

I had surgery in September 10th. So far so good. Getting all my Water requirements in with no issues. I have been fortunate to not even experience any nausea and vomiting. Other than some soreness in my incision sites, I am pleased with my recovery. I am still taking it very slowly t make sure I am giving my body time to heal and get 100%. Only issue is being able to pass as much gas as I would like to but its coming (TMI) I know once that is gone I will feel much much better.

So far I am happy with my decision and my Surgeon is the best. I hope everyone else is having as much success. Good Luck!!

I had my surgery on September 9th.

I was so worried about Constipation, but finally on day 4 post op I went. Whew!

I am getting my Protein shakes and cream Soups. I licked a piece of bacon yesterday boy was that a treat.

I am not a huge fan of fruity waters now either. Just plain ole Water will do. Try to meet or exceed my 64oz a day.

My BIGGEST problem right now is waking up with severe Migraines. They hurt so bad. Anyone else?

My surgery was 9/8. I had hernia repair also. My physician requires a two week clear liquid diet post-op. Homemade broth, decaffeinated green tea and Vitamin Water Zero have been my staples. Ironically, my biggest pain is that a patch of anesthesia has settled into my left shoulder and it's killing me but improving everyday with walks and some liquid Tylenol. My incisions are healing nicely, I'm sleeping better. Day 5 after surgery I really felt like I turned a corner. I have allergies to codeine and morophine, two of the main pain meds that can help manage pain. And because of the way my body metabolizes meds, dilaudid and fentanyl slowed my breathing too much so the only option was Toradol which causes bleeding so we were in a bit of a pickle managing my pain. It was really hard, but only really hard for 3 days. I have occasional head hunger but no physical hunger. I'm hellbent to be 100% compliant with what my surgeon recommends because this was by far, the hardest thing I have ever put myself through and I want to give myself every opportunity to succeed as I only get one shot at this surgery. No cheating or early foods for me, but also no judgement for others. Everyone's path is unique. I must tell myself 10 times a day that I can't believe I actually did it! It's a week behind me! I'm damn excited to get to a point where my walks can turn into runs. Great luck everyone!

I am with ya. I am so committed to not cheating. I have a friend that had the procedure 10 years ago and her advice was to not cheat for a year. She had surgery at the same time as 3 other friends, the ones that didn't cheat for a year have had tremendous success, the ones that did cheat never lost as much or have gained most of it back. That right there is all the motivation I need.

My biggest complaint right now is that I cannot sleep. I am so exhausted, and I feel emotionally drained from the lack of sleep.

@@lmag The elusive sleep, I hear you. Last night was my first good night and what a difference it makes. My issue was that damn shoulder pain. It was liked being stabbed with a knife every time I inhaled and then the knife being pulled out every time I exhaled. It made sleep impossible. So I moved more, took my liquid tylenol more to stay ahead of it and used a heating pad. Made a big difference. Hang in there, it'll come. My doctor recommended that you sleep when you can, whenever you can. Your pattern will even out. You've got this.

@Imag are you not able to sleep lying down because of hernia repair? Was it hiatal hernia? I had one repaired also when I had sleeve done 12 days ago. I didn't have any restrictions after I came home, I stayed in hospital for 2 nights due to not being able to get/keep fluids down. Hope you are feeling better soon.

The doctor didn't give me any restrictions, I am just having trouble sleeping. I tried to sleep in bed last night and that was horrible. I am back in the recliner tonight hoping for some rest. I did have the hiatal hernia repair as well as sleeve. I'm not sure where my discomfort is coming from. But for someone who used to have no trouble sleeping this is driving me crazy!

My surgery was on 9/8 as well and included hernia repair. Still not able to sleep, waves of exhaustion bring me to a screeching standstill. I was beginning to wonder if this not sleeping issue was somehow related to all of the Vitamins my doctor has me taking and 3-4 hours of sleep was part of my 'new-norm'. Glad to know I am not the only one going crazy over this!

I had surgery sept 9th and i had my first bad thing happen yesterday. Been drinking nothing but Water and eating what I can on the Soups but apparently my sugar has been dropping really low causing me to be very weak almost to point of passing out a few times. So yesterday I had a few sips of orange juice and about 3 small bites of a soft taco from Taco Bell. I am not ashamed as I felt 100 percent better after. I have been very afraid of dumping but my new tummy held that good.

@@Jessica2011Marie Congratulations being a week out from surgery! Mine was the 8th! Did you consult with your doctor about your low sugar levels? I'm positive they would have some really great healthy solutions to solve that problem without putting your sleeve at risk. I don't know...I'm not a doctor and I would never shame or judge someone for the choices that they make because we are all adults and our paths are unique. I'm just not convinced that oj and taco bell would have been the safest choice a week out? One of the reasons is the pyloric valve that is still intact after the sleeve. When you send food to your stomach, the stomach pulverizes the food and strong muscular contractions push the food toward the pyloric valve which flushes the food. (lots of pressure) My surgeon told me that the stomach needs time to heal before it can handle those muscular contractions and pressure. There's a lot involved in this surgery and my doctor's office even gave me cell phone numbers of staff to call if there is any iota of a question. That's for the safety of ourselves. I would strongly recommend that you do call your office because the chances of your sugar levels dropping again are strong and they may have a safer alternative....OR OR...maybe you just have to coolest doctor on the planet that thinks what you are doing is medically honky dory?? I hope my comments aren't taken offensively. That definitely was not my intent. Best of luck to you Jessica! I hope every good thing comes your way!

The day I was released from the hospital my sugar dropped really low and they gave me a few sips of orange juice then to get it back up before I would be released. My doctor ok'd it. Yes I realize the taco wasn't best choice but I was 2 hours away from home and didn't really have an option on eating what's best for me.

I had my surgery September 10th so that makes me 7 days post-op today. I've lost 8 lbs. And the swelling and gas seem to be better. I do get pain in my left side still if I over do it. After doing all the research I could before surgery I am really going to take to heart what other sleevers said they had 1) never started 2) done from the beginning. To me, this is about as drastic and life changing as it gets and looking for ways that I can cheat this tool just seems ridiculous. This new mental discipline is going to be the hardest part of the journey but luckily my new stomach will take care of the physical part of it.

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.
