Did everyone have this test? My surgery is set for the 26th, yet my surgeon does not require this test to be done. Should it be done? What is it and why do some centers test for it?

Yes my wife is as tested not long ago for this! It makes you sick everytime you eat or put something in your stomach, so if you don't have those symptoms don't worry you will be fine

My surgery is the 24th

I was tested during my upper GI, my doctor required both before surgery. I have only heard of a few cases on this board or anyone at my doctors office. I believe your fine but, if it stresses you, ask to have the test to ease your mind.

My surgeon said he checked for h pylori when he did my EGD. If levels of bacteria are very high when the surgery is done you are prone to ulcers.

I have never heard of this test. I am definitely not required to have this done but I am also not required to have an endoscopy either. Very interesting information

@@doyouhear I had to have this test done multiple times. When they were first trying to diagnose some of my stomach/digestion issues (which we later found out was GERD), I had to give a stool sample to test for H. Pylori and then they tested me again for it during my upper endoscopy and then I had to do a breath test for it as part of my pre-requisites for surgery. Needless to say I'm 300% sure I don't have H. Pylori. LOL

Unless you're having signs/symptoms of H. Pylori I wouldn't worry too much about it, however I'm on board with @armywife79. If it worries you, just ask to have it done. The breath test is super easy and painless :)

@@funkecoldmedina Interesting that you didn't have to have an endoscopy..all pre-requisites are definitely different!

The endoscopy was sure not fun, but I'm glad I had it because they found a hernia when they did mine. So, my doctor was all ready to fix that during surgery before I ever got there. Also, they did the test then also but, I have heard of the breath test and that's a nice easy way of doing it and putting your mind at ease.

@ I know it! Some people really do have to jump through hoops and I feel so fortunate that this process has really been relatively calm. My only other requirement besides my normal supervised visits with the nutritionist and surgeon was a psych evaluation and a 4 hour Nutrition class (hospital requirement). I definitely know how fortunate I am :)

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
