Newbie - Surgery set for 16th October

Recommended Posts

Hi my name is Jenny and I'm 30 years old. I've struggled with my weight since I was diagnosed with pcos at 15 years of age. In the last couple of years it has gotten out of hand. I am currently the heaviest I've ever been which is both scary and disappointing. After many failed attempts of diet and exercise and months of Internet research I decided things really needed to change and I definitely needed to take my life back! My surgery date is set for 16th October. If anyone has similar dates I am interested in having a support buddy who is going to be going through or has been through the same journey.

I'm on October 6th! Pretty close! I'm so excited and nervous at the same time!

Thanks for replying. At the moment I'm very excited my nerves will most likely kick in closer to the date. It's only 2 more months away for me. Even less for you!

7 weeks from Tuesday! I tried to get it done this summer. I'm a teacher, so that would have been soooo much better! But all the approvals and paperwork didn't get done in time. They told me I could do it next week, but that's my first week back. So I opted for Oct when we have a four day weekend. Less sick days to use!

I would've been very tempted to have taken the surgery next week but I can see why you didn't. It is harder when you need to take a bit of time off work especially with giving work little notice. 7 weeks will go so fast anyway. It'll be surgery day before you know it. What makes you most nervous about having the surgery?

I'm nervous about recovering quickly and being able to eat and drink sufficiently to go back to work. I'm also nervous about blood clots. I've had a dvt before so I'm scared it will happen again. Talked to the surgeon about it though and they are aware and taking precautions. He says I should be just fine! How about you?

Hi Andrea!

I think I'm most nervous about being in the small percentage that it doesn't work for. That's a scary thought.

My Surgeon has told me that I need to go on the liquid diet 2 weeks prior to surgery too as well as 2 - 3 weeks after surgery depending on my recovery. I have no idea how I'm going to get through it. I'll have to try to be really strict on myself.

Oh wow that's amazing! You've lost so much weight in such a short time. Your still in recovery mode right?? My surgery is only 56 days away! I'm excited about it. I've started Optifast for Breakfast and lunch just so I can try lose some extra weight before the big day and so far I'm struggling with the hunger. I think most of it is head hunger that I can't seem to get rid of.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
