I'M A SECRET SLEEVER, AND SO SO VERY HAPPY THAT I AM. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND KEEPING IT A SECRET UNLESS YOU LIKE OTHERS BEING IN YOUR BUSINESS, WATCHING YOU, JUDGING YOU, COMMENTING ON YOU, ETC ETC. MY JOURNEY HAS BEEN SO MUCH SIMPLER KEEPING IT TO MYSELF...THAT'S JUST ME THO.

I had my sleeve aug 3. My husband and teenage daughters knew. Also I have a friend going through it too, so she knew. As for family I told my patents ( who I work for) that I needed 2 wks off wrk for a little procedure. I told no one else!!

When the dr did my sleeve he found I had a hernia - so now if anyone asks why I have been out - I say hernia surgery.

For me I do not want the gossiping behind my back and the chatter.

Now do I think my parents figured it out - yes. But I stick to my hernia story!!

Plus I had complications the first day and was so dehydrated I need 25lbs of Fluid and blood transfusions in me- so that's my story- I am a private person and just that added drama- blah who needs it right now!!

I believe in Secret WLS.....too many have too much to say about anything!

Wow, I'm so glad to see I'm not the only one struggling with the decision to tell or not to tell. My surgery is scheduled for Sept. 15th and I'd really prefer to keep my personal decisions to myself and avoid the judgmental comments of others who know nothing of what I am enduring. That being said, I will take on the comments and questions on an individual bases. One of my biggest deciding factors in my decision for surgery was because a friend shared with me that she has WLS a few years prior, which surprised me because I didn't even know she had ever had a weight problem. When I started checking into it for myself, I was able to ask her about her experience and what to expect and it really helped me make my decision. So if I can help someone else along their journey, I want to be open to that but other than that, I'd really rather keep private.

Since the beginning of the year, I've already lost just over 30 lb's, mostly from cutting out sugar and fast food and trying to change my lifestyle to be closer to what I'll be doing after surgery with the exception of the far smaller portion sizes post-op. I regularly work-out in an aqua-fitness class already and many people have already noticed and commented on the changes. I'm hoping this will help the additional weight loss after surgery be less of a big deal. When people are asking how I've done it, I am just saying I've been making a lot of lifestyle changes and I've also made the the comment, "you name it, I've about done it all" and leave it at that, which is true both before and after surgery.

When I've had to request time off from work and other commitments, I've just told the necessary people that I'm having a medical procedure for personal reasons and prefer to keep it private. They typically think that it's a "female" issue and leave it alone. I've also read somewhere on another post in this group someone else had a great comment

for this by saying "it's just one of those things that is necessary but no one likes to talk about". I love that & knew I'd have to remember that one.

I am still wondering how to best handle comments post-op while still being honest but not broadcasting my personal life to everyone. I'd love to hear more how everyone else is handling this as well. Ultimately, I must remember that regardless of any comments, criticisms, or judgments I may get, my self-worth is not determined by what people say or think of me, but by what God knows of me.

Best wishes to everyone on their journey!

Awesome reading everyone's opinions here. I just posted this exact question about half an hour ago and here the same topic pops up with lots of replies. I really feel that people judge far more than they support, generally. So I will probably keep it quiet.

Hi. I have also decided to keep my journey very secret. The reason that I just can't stand other people's opinions - uncalled for - on my life. Having been through infertility, IVF and a divorce that judgement and opinions from people who do not have a clue really is not welcome here! My husband of course knows - he is a fabulous support. I have told 2 girlfriends with a third finding out from an unguarded posting on a FB thread. I've told my boss I need some surgery but I don't want the rest of the office to know - lovely people but all have their strong opinions too. I'm telling all I'm starting to look after myself better with diet and exercise. I hope it will be that easy. Maybe I'll feel more confident to share my journey after.

My only big worry is if something goes wrong and my parents and brothers didn't even know I was going into hospital....,

I decided to keep it a secret, only telling my husband. Not even my mom or kids know. I told my coworkers that I was having a "women" surgery and no one asked questions. When I started losing weight prior to surgery I attributed it to a low carb diet and carried around Protein Shakes. I am 3 weeks post op now and noone has suspected anything. I only stayed off work for a week. It is no one's business what I do with my own body.

I think there's a difference between private and secret. Generally speaking, privacy builds confidence while secret keeping does not... Privacy is having well conceived boundaries and good strategies for maintaining them. Secrecy is putting up false boundaries and lies to maintain the image of intimacy and connection where there is not. Secrets like these breed shame - because we imagine the judgments of those we hide from and apply them to ourselves. Not a fun cycle :/

To me - it sounds like many of us here are doing the heathy work of sorting out what is private and what is exposed. Little of this sounds like secret keeping to me.

As for me, I have shared this with close friends I respect and value. For some (like gram-mama) I've had to have long explanations which were tense at moments. But that was better to me than trying to maintain a false sense of connection while keeping the truth from her. Most others - I couldn't care less what they think and so I don't include them on my process. They may hear gossip...or create it...which only verifies their untrustworthiness to me in this regard. I did put s note up on Facebook to about a hundred family members and friends....but that list was carefully created...and the post was only for them.

I don't want to do this surgery in secret - and yet I don't want to do it alone. It's not secret if you decide who knows (even if only 1). But don't be mistaken! Intimacy is created exclusively by the mutual sharing of secrets. The more we withhold, the less intimacy we'll enjoy.

My health is my business, not my co-workers or my neighbors. I am not required to share my health information with anyone. The only people who know are my BFF and my family and that's it. I don't run around sharing all my health information.

2 days until I fly out to San Diego to have my Bypass Surg. in Tiajuana Mexico. Not gonna lie, the nerves are starting to surface. I don't fear the surgery itself, or the fact that I'm traveling alone, but its the aftermath that I'm stressing about the most, after this 8 week wait. I'm excited to finally be here, but I am really dreading the post surgical chapter. I know its going to be tough, real tough and I think I'm just in my head to much now that the day i here. Wish me luck, Hopefully I'm one of the lucky ones, and everything goes smoothly. Cant wait to give an exciting update,. If there is anyone else have a June bypass or even a recent one, Id love to have someone to compare war stories with. Also, anyone near San Antonio Tx? See ya soon with the future me. 💜

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.
