Recommended Posts

So tomorrow i go in for my gastric bypass. I cant believe how fast the day came. It feels like just yesterday my primary doctor was referring me to the surgery and now here i am!! I am so excited to start this new journey, but im not going to lie im also very terrified. Its my first surgery ever and im not knowing what to expect. Any words of advice? Im interested in hearing other people's stories, advice, recommendations?!

Congratulations! There will be days that you may doubt your decision, but keep up the hard work and keep moving forward. It's not a quick fix and it takes a lot of hard work after. It is a mental game and you can beat it. The surgery really helps with that. I was really scared before my surgery too, but I am 11 months post-op and am incredibly grateful for sticking to it. This is a life-changing and life-saving decision. IT'S WORTH IT!!

Congrats and good luck! As someone else said there will be days you may ask yourself what you have done, but it's worth it! I had a minor set back, but I am about 8 weeks post op and hoping to move to stage five on Monday. I can honestly say I am just starting to feel like myself again!

Congrats Newnewme!! Hoping and praying all goes well for you. In the hospital, just remember everyone is there to take care of you! Ask for what you need. Hospital staff get busy, so you may need to be persistent. Treat everyone with kindness and dignity and it is usually returned. When I had my hysterectomy, I brought a jar with Hershey kisses with a note to whoever came in that I was thankful for them and to help themselves. Got to know some great people who came by to get their chocolate fix. Not sure that would be appropriate given the surgery I'm having, so I'm trying to think of something else.

Also, hospitals are not made for sleeping unless you are under anesthesia. I always take earplugs and an eye mask. I also always bring my pillow and a cheerful throw blanket to make it a little more homey. I also always take a play list of relaxing, uplifting music to listen to during my anxious moments.

Good luck!

Just realized that I am a couple of days late in writing what I just did. Hope your recovery is going well!!

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
