Hello from a newbie...

Recommended Posts

Greetings all. My name is Julia...I'm 34 years old and I had the sleeve surgery on 7/27/15.

It's been emotional for me. You see, my initial consult was scheduled on 9/22/14. My husband of 16 years, Sam, had suddenly passed away the day before from congestive heart failure at the age of 48. As you can imagine, my WLS plans went to hell in a handbasket. I binged on comfort and junk foods as a way to cope and gained 20 pounds on top of where I was.

I knew Sam wanted me to get better and he wanted for us to grow old together. I went through a lot of, "What's the point of going on?" feelings and wishing I could just go with him. I finally got past that stage and here I am. I am still feeling overwhelmed. This liquid stage is terrible. Nothing tastes good except sugar free Popscicles and I'm sick of everything, even the chewable Vitamins. I already screwed up on the pre-op diet and my liver was too fatty...my doc went through with the surgery and I feel bad I disappointed him and failed so early in the game. I did kind of shoot myself in the foot getting braces put on my teeth recently too because my mouth was too sore to eat anything heavier than pureed stuff.

I'm overwhelmed at moments. It scares me how overwhelmed I am and not even through with the first week. I'm glad I did this, I wish I didn't do this and could order a pizza. I dunno.

I am so sorry for your loss. It has got to be so hard to go through such a massive change on top of your grief. Please be gentle with yourself and don't be afraid to ask for and accept support from your friends, family, your surgical team, and folks on these boards.

I know the early liquid and soft stages are tough but they will be over soon. The good thing is that they aren't forever.

Just do the best you can but try hard to get in your Protein and fluids. Both are critical for healing.

Please keep us posted on how you are doing.

Welcome :0) I am new here too. I had the Sleeve on July 23rd. I think I am doing ok, I am a little hungry. I think my hunger is because my body wants to eat more than broth and sugar free Jello lol. I am glad you are here and I believe we can do this. Just keep reaching out. God Bless.

Gina

I really do feel for you, the last 10 months must have been so very difficult. However I commend your courage to carry on and to want good health, in a time when you are still grieving for your husband. This in itself is a form of bereavement, it’s the loss of food but as Inner Surfer Girl said, it won't be forever. Are there any WLS support groups in your area you could attend? Can your Doctor help?

I do feel coming here and chatting, making friends and when needed venting, would really help you. I wish you all the very best and send a hug to you. You're not alone.

Kate

I'm so sorry to hear of your husband's loss. The emotional upheaval from that alone is overwhelmingly traumatic. But as you said he wanted you to be healthy, and you need to be healthy for yourself most of all. I hope the road ahead is smoother. Best of luck on your journey!

I am so sorry for your loss. I applaud you for still having the courage to go through the surgery, as I know that was not easy. I wish you the best in your journey as you learn to live your life post surgery. I wish I could hug you.

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
