Figured I would start this one as well:

What is everyone doing and planning on doing? Anyone looked into Curves?

I run 3x a week and do a weights circuit 3 x a week - I tried Curves (had a free pass) but I'm pretty fit and it wasnt challenging enough for me, nor would it alone provide enough aerobic exercise.

But I think its a fantastic place to start, in a supportive environment without demanding a scary amount of time.

For those of you already banded; how are abdominal exercises with the port? Any issues? Most of us probably need a lot of work on our middles. Just curious how long before we should consider doing any crunches, etc.

I joined Workout Express a year ago and go 5 times a week. (like curves but a bit more intense workout). I was banded almost 3 months ago. The 30 min circuits are great for starters. If you are not accustomed to working out, 30 min circuits etc will help you begin the process. But be creative, if you can periodically run the circuit "outside the box" it will help so your body does not get in a rut. I add in some floor work like crunches etc to every workout. The following is a political statement, so stop reading if you dont want to read a link of politics to exercise. In case it matters to you, it does to me...Curves although franchised, the corporation is owned by someone whose political views are the polar opposite of mine, I am left of left so I looked for a place that worked for me. Good Luck with your exercise program!

BfyneNTyme, How are you? How did your surgery go? We were banded on the same day. You should come back and see us at the Lucky 7's. We're having a lot of support over there, and a lot of fun.

Hope everything is well!!!

Hello Lyn..surgery went great and I'm doing well. I took 1 week off and was back in the gym the following Monday. I'm loving it! I've lost 12 lbs so far. I was amazed at how well I felt 3 days after surgery. Besides the gas and a little soreness I really felt great! By Friday of that same week I knew I would be back in the gym on Monday. I hope all is going well for you too! Let me know!

byneNTyme, Great to hear your doing well, and 12 lbs. is great. I'm down 14, not too bad for no pre op diet. I've been out walking and that's all I'm allowed, Dr. orders. for two more weeks. I go tomorrow for my check up. Great to hear you're doing well. The Lucky 7's are planning a Bandaversary Cruise next year, around 08/08/08. Some of us would like to meet in person. Think about it. We have a poll going for the destination for the cruise, and whether you'd like to bring along a spouse/partner.

Talk to you later.

Oh this is a great thread. Everyone is pumped and doing SO well.!!!!

I have been walking ... even when i got home from the hospital that evening after surg at noon. I was a little slower than my usual, but I was circulating the blood!! LOL

Since then I've been walking 1 hr a day, and today I went back to the "Y" for the first time... Did 15 mins. on the Eliptical Trainer and 20 min. on the treadmill at max. heart rate... oh it felt good... I was only kinda sad that I couldn't do my weight routine... gotta wait another couple of wks for that.

HUGS everyone

Just a quick FYI...which probably won't affect anyone but me....

Curves is made for the average sized woman...I am 6ft tall and the machines just do not accomodate my height and I was unable to extend my legs and arms appropriately. At first I was afraid it was my weight, but my average sized sister (6'1") had the same problem.

Just figured I'd let you know.

Oh, it did, however, work great for my mil directly after her gastric bypass surgery and she was quite large.

Water Aerobics! It's great! No stress on your joints. I took classes for years. I have a pool, so while weather permits, I alternate treadmill one day, next day water aerobics. In the winter, I go to a local gym pool.:D

IMHO Curves workout is fine if you are just getting back into excersise, but don't take out a LONG membership as you will soon get to a point where CURVES is holding you back in your excersise goals... then you will need a full service gym.

A full service gym is where there are treadmills, eliptical trainers, recumbent bikes(you sit back with back support) weights, classes of various sorts... I love my Y membership.

They also have aquafit classes etc...

much more variety and I am one who gets bored VERY easily, so If I dont' change up my workout a couple of times a week... I'll just stop going.

VARIETY is the spice of life right???

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
