Hello, I'm due to be sleeved on July 8th and I'm so nervous. It's so bad I'm questioning whether to go through with it. What are some things I should take to the hospital?

I'm very nervous too. Mine is 7/9 and I keep going back and forth changing my mind.

2nd thoughts are normal as you proceed through the process. There have even been those that have backed out at the last minute. It's a good reason why the waiting time and hoops are so extensive. It gives you plenty of time to research, consider, and then reconsider again. Just be positive that this is really what you want before you find yourself on that operating table.

Once you've resolved any last minute hesitations and do decide to proceed, I'm sure you'll be joining the "I only regret not having done it sooner" club. At least that's what I hope for myself.

Good luck!

I was just going to post something to the OPs effect -- I'm July 17, and I'm panicking. My headaches are starting to kick in on this liver shrinkage diet, and I'm really worried. I want to be healthy and lose weight, but I've afraid of the things I'll have to give up.

Hey hi I really doubt there is a person who has gone through this that hasn't had a second thought about whether to do this or not so that's probly normal it's hard to make this choice no one does it without a single reservation if you have gone thru all the hoops they make u jump thru to have this tool and u back out u may have to start over if u want to do it just something to think over and I'm absolutely not saying u should do it anyway if u have genuine reservations then u should resolve those issues first don't do something u don't really want to do but just keep in mind nothing worth having or doing is ever really easy I'm just over 4 months post op sleeve is it hard sometimes??? Hell yeah but I can honestly say being so heavy was worse so many health issues mobility issues lots of meds loss of friends family treating u like crap also co workers and bosses treating u less than etc I don't regret it at all good luck to you

@betterliving- as for what to take to the hospital. Maybe your cell phone and charger, some take chapstick ( I did but never used it) I wore home what I wore there. Take a pillow for putting between you and the seatbelt for the ride home. Other than that I didn't need anything, I was done as an outpatient so I had no time for anything else.

@sleeve- you have already done the hardest part in my opinion. Don't back out now. You will do amazing, just get to the other side!

@Cognorati001- the headaches will get better, you are detoxing in way. Hang in there and make sure you are drinking plenty as it helps a lot!!

I am absolutely a member of the "I wish I had done it sooner club" Good luck ladies!! :)

I'm also in that club. Take chapstick, a pillow, & cell phone charger. The hospital will provide the rest. If you can, fill your post-op prescriptions before surgery. Find out what your surgeon wants you to have post-op, and pick up some of that as well, but not a lot. You won't be on that diet long. I purchased regular Vitamins that met my NUT's specs, but had to order soft-chews on Amazon because pills didn't work for me, even with a pill crusher.

Get your home ready for post-op. When they release you, you'll just want to go home and rest, not run errands or do housework.

There is nothing that I have had to give up. I can eat whatever I want without any issues. No dumping, have not thrown up once, post op two years later this month. Sleeve O' Steel! What you can have and what you should have are two different things. Best thing I ever did.

Also...Try Vitamin Water Zero or G2 for headaches, the electrolytes help. The pre op diet got much easier by day 5 but was still the hardest part of the entire process for me.

Good luck! You can do it.!!!

Thank you for the encouragement. Headache is gone, but I feel weak (I can deal with that perfectly fine). I'm worried that I don't have any weight loss to report to my nutritionist, but I have my period and always gain that Water weight...

Chele,

You say that you can eat whatever you want? I wonder how you handle the rule that you have to eat Protein first and then good carbs etc. How do you eat a piece of pizza or a Pasta dish for example? It's all mixed together?

How do you handle drinking wine? Eating a piece of cheesecake? I just assumed that would off limits..

What I was trying so say was the sleeve doesn't have some of the issues as bypass such as dumping which makes some foods off limits for many. You said you we're nervous about what you had to give up. Truth is, I don't have to give up anything, but I choose to. Yes, the rule is Protein first, which I still follow the majority of the time. I am almost 2 years post op and at goal so I am I maintenance now.

pizza is not a regular menu item for me. When my family has pizza I will either eat the topping off of a slice or maybe eat a half of a slice with the crust. I am Italian so Pasta is an every Sunday event. I make my own sauce and meatballs. I eat a meatball or two first and then a very small serving of pasta if I have room.

I do not drink wine so that is not an issue for me......if you want a glass of wine you can certainly have one if it fits in your daily plan of calories allowed. Example: if I am going to a party and I know there is going to be cake, I make sure I eat very few carbs and more protein with the meal so the small piece of cake will be ok.

It's a learning process and it takes time but it is the best thing I ever did. I am sure you will do fine.

Thanks so much for your answer. I am one day away from surgery and feeling a bit apprehensive. I appreciate your support.

btw- I'm Italian as well and food and entertaining is central to my family! I just find it hard to imagine a different life.

Thanks again.

Mine is on July and for the past couple of days I haven't bee n sleeping well because I keep thinking about my surgery. I'm just telling myself to stay encouraged. And I watch videos on YouTube of people that have gotten it. ????

I won't lie about not being nervous. The closer it gets, the more nervous I become. I'm fortunate that DH was sleeved 2 weeks ago. This has allowed me to see the process and enhance my awareness of what's to come. I've watched YouTube videos (not of surgery, but after) to familiarize myself of the road ahead. When nervous I remind myself of who I want to become (again), and it helps reinforce my decision to pursue surgery. Good luck with which ever route you choose.

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
