Hi Guys,

I am new to the group and looking for some advice please if anyone can help!!

I was lucky enough to have my surgery in Nov 08 so i am now almost 9 yrs post op. About 4 yrs ago i started to get unusual symptoms. i have always tried to maintain a healthy diet since my surgery and have kept my weight down quite well although did put back on about 14lbs. The symptoms appear to be very similar to those of diabetes but i have been tested and cleared of this. The symptoms usually start by feeling tired, lethargic. Then i will become extremely hot and I will then start to feel slightly numb on my tongue which will then increase to round the outside of my mouth. Then i become very shaky and confused. This can all last between 10 minutes and an hour and will usually wipe me out for the rest of the day. I also become so very hungry straight after this happens, and in some cases its happened so fast ive almost passed out with the sheer tiredness i have felt. These symptoms where very few and far between for a couple of years but now its every other day. I have had blood test and confirmed that my Iron is low bout other than that everything else seems to be ok with me. i also moved to the other side of the country (uk to scotland) a few years ago so do not have contact with my consultant any longer so i am unable to ask for his advice.

If anyone can help me shed any light on this i would be extremely grateful as it appears to be taking over my life.

Many thanks in advance,

Steph

You don't say what your blood sugar is. I get this and it's because of low sugar levels.

get yourself a blood sugar meter so you can test your blood sugar when you have one of these attacks.

Several people who have had gastric bypass surgery develop hypoglycemia (low blood sugar). This is independent of whether they had diabetes before surgery or were not diabetic.

Hypoglycemia is a condition characterized by abnormally low blood glucose (blood sugar) levels, usually less than 70 mg/dl.

The signs of hypoglycemia are:

Shakiness

Nervousness or anxiety

Sweating, chills and clamminess

Irritability or impatience

Confusion, including delirium

Rapid/fast heartbeat

Lightheadedness or dizziness

Hunger and nausea

Sleepiness

Blurred/impaired vision

Tingling or numbness in the lips or tongue

Headaches

Weakness or fatigue

Anger, stubbornness, or sadness

Lack of coordination

Nightmares or crying out during sleep

Seizures

Unconsciousness

After surgery, some patients experience this condition by fainting. Once they understand what happened to them, it doesn't seem to be a problem. Because they recognize the symptoms of the onset of another bout and take appropriate action.

To halt the episode one needs to take around 15 grams of simple carbohydrates. This can include:

glucose tablets or gel tube

2 tablespoons of raisins

4 ounces (1/2 cup) of juice

1 tablespoon honey

8 ounces of nonfat or 1% milk

hard candies, jellybeans, or gumdrops.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!
