How could I have been so stupid?

Recommended Posts

I had gastric bypass 6 weeks ago today. I have had very little problems introducing solid foods. So I started to get a little cocky -- a couple of days ago I had peas for the first time. I had a LOT of pain and gas. I was wondering what that was all about -- "Could that have been 'dumping syndrome'?" Last night, I had corn on the cob. After two bites, I decided to not have any more. Well thank goodness for some common sense! I really suffered discomfort, gas, and nausea - this time after about an hour of fighting it, I finally lost my dinner (which instantly relieved all my suffering). What was I thinking? Peas? Corn? Two veggies with a lot of sugar -- surprise, surprise I was having problems. I guess I'm not invincible! ;)

Aside from the sugars that can be in corn or peas, corn doesn't break down in your system. Corn is one of the only foods that goes down whole and comes out pretty whole. I've had some corn since surgery but I make sure to chew it very very very well before swallowing, and very little. Usually just in salsa or guacamole or mixed into meat. Early out post op corn is dangerous because it can block your new stomach connection. I would avoid it for sure for a while.

Corn was also on the no-no list for me.

I have steered away from corn because I was told that I can't really digest it. Other veggies with tough skin or are stringy I don't try. (Asparagus, celery unless it is finely cut or cooked down, cabbage has to be well cooked) I have not tried peas.

Here in Minnesota the sweet corn is just starting to show up. I am really going to miss it this year :-(

I discussed what happened with my doctor and nutritionist yesterday at my 6 week check up. You were right @@blashlee, I probably had a temporary blockage. I had not idea -- I don't remember being told about that. I agree with you @@Tomojac, I will miss corn this year, but believe me it's not worth it! But the good news, this shouldn't be forever. :P

We were also warned about avoiding corn in my program. But when you're in class it seems like such an innocent faraway abstract.

It helps to learn as a pre op from a post op that there are indeed consequences for straying from the script. So I really appreciate you sharing your experience!

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
