Sleeved June 24th & I have questions

Recommended Posts

I came home yesterday. So far I'm not having trouble with fluids or Protein Shakes. How long after surgery did you stay on pain meds? I'm able to go 6 hours between taking them, but much longer than that and I'm in serious pain again.

I'm trying to get my Vitamins sorted out too. I'm still breastfeeding my 16 month old, so it's extra important that I get good vitamins taken when I'm supposed to. What Calcium supplement does everyone take? What about Iron?

I'm sure I'll have more questions as I think about things.

WOW! You have a lot to think about!

Hi KeepOnRockin!

I stayed on pain meds for 6 days. I really did not need them on day 4 but if I moved around or did some walking, I had some pain. NEVER wait for the pain to get so bad that you MUST have a pill. Take it when you feel about 5/10 on the pain scale. Once the pain gets too high it is so much harder to get rid of.

This soon after surgery don't worry so much about "bariatric" Vitamins. My Dr. told me to concentrate on getting Calcium from milk/protein shakes and not to start the chewable vitamins for at least 10 days--no matter how much you chew them they are a "hard" food. Unless your low on Iron, the sleeve won't make you low in Iron. Trying to get the Protein and learning how your new belly works is really enough right now.

You're gonna be fine

Everyone's bodies are different. I took pain pills for a day or two once out of the hospital. Some people might need them longer some shorter. Also, stressing about too many things will wear you down, do what you need for your wee one, the rest will fall nto place.

I had my sleeve on 6/24 and still take a narcotic pain med mid-day and at bedtime. In addition to that, I also take tylenol extra strength 2-3 times daily.

Keep in mind that Vicodin, Percocet, etc all have tylenol (generic acetaminophen) in them. You should not take more than 4000 mg tylenol in any form in a 24 hour period. I am still writing down diet/painmeds/liquid intake so that I keep everything straight.

The longer you use narcotics, the more problems with Constipation occur. Fluid and exercise will get things moving, but constipation isn't pretty at this point!!!

Thanks everyone! I figured it was normal to be on the pain meds for a while after. I can take them every 4 hours, but during the day I've been comfortably going 6 to 8 hours between doses.

My doc told me to start Vitamins once I was home so that's what I was thinking about. I've got some bariatric chewable vitamins. I'm sure I'll be fine for a bit longer.

My Surgeon suggest the Bariatric chewable and the Calcium chew too. He sells them in his office. Maybe ask your doc what he suggests :) good luck

I was on the pain meds for 3 days after surgery. I did every 4 hours at first as prescribed then I started stretching them out until I was at 8 hours, then quit.

I am on a whole regimen of Vitamins per my surgeon and he also said not to start taking them until a week post-op.

I see my surgeon on Thursday so I'll be 8 days post op. I'm going to hold off on any major decisions until then.

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
