Anyone purchase complication insurance? My insurance company tells me they won't cover complications. I'm not necessarily expecting any...but they can happen even with good surgeons and adherence to post-op instructions. If they happen, it will get expensive very quickly. I'm willing to pay for the surgery if insurance won't approve me, but not sure I can expose my family to the risk of complications. Even if it is statistically a small risk.

It's your total # of days staying in Mexico.

i notice this only covers you while in Mexico. I'm searching for insurance that would also cover you after you return home. Judging by what I'm reading for others who have complications, they require multiple trips to ER and days or even weeks in the hospital. If you are that sick, you have to get to the closest hospital quickly. For me, that's in the US.

I think the insurance will cover the a plane ticket to go back and see the doctor. The downside, if you are not able to do that due to unable to travel.

We added a 2nd provider moments ago that does offer coverage in the states.

A response from the insurance company to your issue....

"To be honest, I don’t know what kind of complications you're is talking about. In 5 years, all complications we’ve handled have always been in Mexico. If the patient is coming for a bariatric surgery, they stay in Mexico for about 4-5 days after the surgery. Those days are enough for them or their doctors to identify a possible complication, report it and start the coverage process. According to many doctors and hospitals we work with, and the doctors from the insurance company, the possibility of a complication in a bariatric surgery is between the first 24-72 hours after the surgery has been performed.

Also, is very important to specify that our policy only covers the complications that arise from the surgery and not the complications arising from the patient or doctor’s negligence. If the patient eats something they shouldn’t and they have a complication, they will not be covered for it because they’re not following the indications of your doctors. If the patients are back in their home country and they start having complications, they can fly back to Mexico and be treated with your doctors, and the insurance company would cover all their expenses as long as the policy is still in force by the time they had the first symptom of the complication. Also, as you can see, our policy offers the highest coverage limit of a policy of its kind in the world at the lowest cost. This is because costs in Mexico are much lower than costs in the U.S. or Canada."

I've been following the complications forum, and it appears they can happen months out from surgery, not just the first few days. Plus, some people have been in and out of the hospital for months. I also have seen more than one story where if there are complications, they pack you up and head back to the US.

I'm not saying complications are common, but you can't ignore the potential no matter how small. The emotional burden of dealing with a complication is huge. I can't imagine dealing with a financial burden on top of that. Don't forget about missing work, etc. I just can't see putting my family through the risk. The exposure is too great.

Keep in mind this is also applies if I am self-pay in the states or in Mexico. The risk is the same. This is not about where I have the surgery.
