Someone noticed! A friend at work who I haven't seen in a while said, "Something's different about you. Have you been losing weight?" I was thrilled, but of course didn't want her to know how over the moon I was by her comment. I simply said in reply that I've working hard at it and it was nice of her to notice. I've been smiling ever since! :D

Am I really that vain?

YES!!! :D

kidding bud ;)

no you are not vain!!!!!

I don't think what you said about yourself pertains to vanity anyways

nothing wrong with feeling proud, happy

better about yourself

weight loss/ accomplishments etc ;)

sounds like you want to hear a few well deserved comments/compliments

nothing wrong with that

you have/ will continue to lose more weight and feel wonderful :)

people will notice your weight loss sooner than later

you WILL get those nice comments :)

per you

"I have to laugh though because I really didn't want to share with others that I've had the surgery -- I got my wish didn't I? :)"

yep  as "they" say, "be careful what you ask/wish for"

for what its worth, I think you are looking great

i envy your 5'11 stature to my 5'3 height (or lack of :D )

I have lost over 40 lbs and nobody says a word. But I have gone down almost 2 sizes so feel great about it. I think the more you have to lose the longer it takes for people to notice. Just my opinion.

This was an interesting set of comments to read. Today was my first day back to work since my 6/22/15 surgery. I didn't expect (or want) any comments as no one at work knows about my sleeve except my boss, and because I am also up and down and all around with weight.

For the future, I think I'll much prefer "you look great!" to "have you lost weight?" I'm going to take that to heart myself when I compliment others.

I LOVE the answer above to "how much have you lost?" "Just enough to be sassy." I can't wait to use that one!!!!

Lol! People can't win. I HATE comments about my appearance when I'm losing weight.... Actually I don't like comments about my body under most circumstances. Cute hair? Fine. Nice outfit? Fine. "you're looking thinner" as they look at my body... they might as well say "great boobs" in terms of how inappropriate it feels.

I agree that it takes quite a while for people who see you regularly to notice. It's usually after a break that the penny drops. This suits me fine as I don't want the attention. Most people just say that I'm looking well, which is fine. No-one has been rude enough to ask outright how much I've lost - the nearest has been 'You must have lost loads' and I just say yes thanks I have and change the subject. Some people have worried that I'm ill, as I had cancer three years ago so they ask if I've lost it on purpose. One of my friends knows about the surgery but didn't notice anything until I'd lost over 50lb. Now when she sees me she asks if my clothes are getting looser. I'm down 6 sizes so if I tried to wear my original clothes they'd be in a pool around my feet!

I've said this before, but my favorite comment was, "You've lost a crap ton of weight!" Makes me wonder, though... How many pounds are in a crap ton?

I haven't been shy about telling people about the surgery. However it took until around 50 # for people to actually notice. A few of my self-absorbed size 0 sisters-in-law have not said a word (I'm at 71 # lost now) - which is fine. Also I guess I should watch my mouth because everyone who asks how much I've lost or how I'm doing, I respond proudly "Down 71 lbs, 66 to go!" I kind of tell it like it is :/

That was my m.o. too. And it works great... as long as you keep losing. I imagine that if you stop before reaching goal, the question and answer thing might get a little squeamish. On the other hand, it sure is a great motivator!

I am so please that at 5 weeks post surgery I've lost 39 lbs (since I've started this journey). I feel so much better, it's amazing! However not one person outside of my family has noticed that I've lost weight. I realize that I'm 5'11" and proportionally that's not as much than if I was 5'2", but still I'm disappointed. I know, I know that I didn't do this for the reaction I'd get, but it still bugs me. I have to laugh though because I really didn't want to share with others that I've had the surgery -- I got my wish didn't I? :)

I'm down a little over 60 and people are JUST starting to notice, and I'm 5'5.

Plus, if these people see you often, the change is kind of gradual.. They'll notice soon!

I lost about 60 pounds and was down from a 24/26 to about a 22 before people said anything. However, I think I must have looked different to them because I have never had so many nice compliments about my hair, lol! I had worked in the same hospital for 30 years, so I knew everyone well, and while they didn't know about my surgery, they were generally nice, supportive people.

I left that job and went to a new one at 100 pounds lost, and lost the remaining roughly 50 pounds in the first 6 months. I also loved that no one there knew me as a morbidly obese person. Only 2 or 3 people ever noticed/mentioned that weight loss. I don't think it's a dramatic. However, when I see someone from my old job, they are still blown away. Lots of the time, people do not recognize me. I can go incognito in a town I've lived in my entire life.

@MichiganChic The hair compliments are actually about your face looking thinner and their not quite attributing the change in how your face looks to the right place.

Well done and I can see how nice it would be to switch jobs at that point so that you can just be your present self and not bring any baggage from the past along with you.

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!
