How do I get the liquids/proteins in?

Recommended Posts

Hi there, I'm 7 days post-op RNY. So my nut book and dr orders say at least a total of 64 ounces Fluid daily and of that I need at least 80-100 grams of Protein. Ok I have gotten the nectar fruit Protein Powder and the wonderful Premier Protein shakes from SAMs, I've divided my portions into 4 oz into baby cups so that I have a day's worth made up in the fridge but geezzzz.....even with the highest protein count, that still comes up to like 4-5 Liquid Protein meals. I can't seem to get it all in and I feel sloshy! I tried 4 different laxatives approved by my dr before turning to an enema to get relief for a bm on day 4. Up until that point, the pain from gas was extreme and the moments of unbearable pressure would mount and rise. Getting relief and the walking finally helped. Now I just am worried about getting in enough protein and liquids and the more I drink the more bloated I feel. Guess I'm gonna have to do lax again bc no bm since the enema and I feel like I'm building back up to that pain again. Any advice? I feel hunger pangs when I don't get enough protein but the more I drink between that and my Water, the more I feel like I'm bloating up.

I was told....and mind you, this is only what I was told....

That I'd be lucky to get in 40 oz. per day the first 2 weeks

and 2 shakes a day. (Which would be part of that 40 oz.)

At least my NUT was realistic.

I'm still in the hospital, and although yes, I have been getting iv fluids, I'm drinking 1 to 1 1/2 shakes per day

sipping on Water, eating ice chips continuously,...but it's not adding up to 64 oz. at this point.

My NUT said it would take time to work up to those kinds of numbers

you may be doing too much....maybe you should consult your NUT again and ask if those numbers were realistic.

I'm not sure about all this laxative enema stuff either. They are giving me stool softener in the hospital, yes, but no enemas.

Are you lactose intolerant? That may be adding more gas, where it's not needed if you're mixing your shakes with milk. They don't have Lactaid at the hospital, so I know the suffrage. I'm lactose intolerant, and the gas is getting to me, as well.

These nectar fruit Protein powders....are they sugar free, too? I know some people have issues too with sweeteners.

I hope you get it worked out. And also don't be SO hard on yourself. I really think they were unrealistic with what they expected from you, just my opinion. The people to talk to are at your Surgeon's office/ your team of bariatric nurses and nutritionists. They should be able to help.

Thanks so much! Yes the nectar whey Protein is sugar free and I'm mixing with Water. The body is a two way system, stuff goes in, stuff has to come out, ha ha. So I think if I could get more to come out then I'd feel better. I have precise instructions that came from dr and nut, a books worth but sometimes the info is confusing and it's just easier to reach out to someone! Thanks for your response! Best of luck to you!

Hi, 9 months post-op RNY. At first I could not get everything in, my main focus was to stay hydrated . I used one oz medicine cups filled with Water and worked at it till I could get one in me every 15 minutes to start. The best kind of Protein Shakes are whey isolate, we absorb the Protein better. whey concentrates area combination of different Proteins so you don't really know how much you are getting. Read your labels carefully. It should say Whey Isolate on the jar or it should be the 1 st ingredient on the label.

It took me a while to be able to get my protein in but I made sure about getting my water in cause I didn't want to go back into the hospital to be rehydrated.

It will come, just be patient with yourself and take things easy.

Good luck on your journey.

Hi, try some chamomile tea every morning... You also have to mentally train your body - don't fret as gravity will take hold but do try the cup of warm tea

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
