Had my drain removed today

Recommended Posts

I was sleeved 14 months ago and am very active on these boards. First time I'm reading about people having drains post WLS! I wonder when and how often they are used?

My doctor places a drain in all of his patients as well. I read a few topics on here about drains so it looks like others have had it as well. It helps to avoid having an abscess since the liquids are drained instead of staying inside.

I'm five days post op, drain still in. I'm getting 10-20 cc every 6 hours, which doesn't seem like much, but who knows? I like the idea of self removal, I changed dressings on the site today and saw where the stitches would need to be cut.. Is my drain volume normal?

Hi Craig, I had 10cc of Fluid in my drain for a few days, by a week it was around 8cc and when it was removed it was about 5cc every six hours. I would say yours is normal. Good luck with removal. Its only a few seconds.

Hi Craig. I was draining around 30 cc every 6 hours or so but the doc said it's not so much the amount of liquid as it is its color. It has to look least bloody... more yellowish/brownish because we produce peritoneal liquid naturally every day. When all you are draining is this liquid then it can be removed. Still have to get your doc's ok before removing it to make sure. Good luck!

thanks for this. I'm seeing the doc today, maybe it will be removed since I seem to be about the same status as you describe.

I'm 2 days post op and I feel like the drain is the only area causing me severe pain, other than the gas in my chest and in my shoulder. Did you have a lot of stabbing pains with the drain? Does it pass? My post op appointment is next Wednesday and I don't know how I'll make it through the weekend.

Hi! I am sorry to hear you are having a bad time.

Is your drain secured??? Mine was secured in place ALL the time with dressings and tons of tape. The discomfort came when I removed all of this to take a shower but it got much better again after the dressing was changed and secured again. Have you tried that?

I am a resleeve and had a drain both the times. This time I am four days post op and the drain is still oozing red diluted liquid and even some tissue. Doc says it's okay. Will leave it in longer. Perhaps 2-4 days more. Am really inconvenienced. ????????????????????

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞
