I know this sounds stupid.. but how do you know when you're full?? I am 4 days post op and I am in so much pain that I can't tell what's going on at all. It's excruciating. I don't know if I'm hungry, if I'm stuffed, if I'm dying, if I'm going to be just fine. I just don't know. Water is getting easier to swallow and my full liquids are simple to eat and keep down.. but I don't know if I'm eating enough to fill me up. I ate a half cup of reduced fat cream of chicken Soup today but I didn't feel any different afterwards than I did before I ate it. How much should I be aiming for as a serving size for Soups and puddings and yogurt?

You have to measure...volume. You should have gotten some specific guidelines on amounts. If not call your NUT. I had to learn to stop before the amounts given though to avoid the tightness in my chest.

yes, measure. It took me a good 3 months or so to feel any kind of fullness. It's been 9 months and I still don't feel it until it's too late. ack! Then I don't feel too great. blah Measure measure measure ;)

I am almost 6 weeks post op and I don't get the full feeling yet. I actually don't get hungry much. I eat based on the clock and I eat by measurements. Good luck

I am 5 days post op, I don't even get a hungry feeling. I eat because I know I have to. I have had up to a half cup and I'm fine. I'm scared to push it any further. I'm finding if I eat a little and wait a few hours then have something else I am ok. Pushing lots of Water, but it's hard getting in the 32 Oz my doctor said to intake.

Generally immediately after gastric bypass surgery, the most important requirements are Vitamins, fluids and Protein. food is secondary. Your body is converting your stored fat into energy to drive your body. Thus you lose weight. When it comes to food, consume the volume of food at each meal dictated by the requirements of the program.

You really need to check with your surgeons office on the amount you should be consuming for each meal. I had gastric bypass and for me it was 1/4 cup in the beginning. I am now 7 months post op and depending what I eat, I can eat about 1/2 to 3/4 cup at most.

I definately ate too much last night and I was miserable!

Measuring and tracking is really important.

Good luck!

I have to agree with most of the posts here.. I am almost 8 weeks post op and I have to eat based on measurements and not on feeling. I "could" eat until I'm stuffed, but that feeling is very painful for me. So i measure my food, eat my Protein first, and then when I start thinking I'm full (or after about 20 minutes) I put my food away or do the dishes.

Technically, I could "graze" all day. But I know better than to do that.

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
