Sleeping/soiling Question

Recommended Posts

After surgery, has anyone had a problem with soiling them self while asleep?

I'm embarrassed to even ask, but I've had this problem twice. Nothing major, but enough that I had to shower and change the sheets/clothes etc. I'm going to see my Doctor about it this week but wanted to ask if anyone has had issues with this.

I was having a problem with waking up in the middle of the night choking on vomit. My doctor put me on a prescription antacid and that problem has gone away but just last night I awoke to a minor mess. I'm wondering if it is a side effect of the medication?

I'm not taking any laxatives. The only thing I am doing is I usually eat broccoli twice a day. If I get hungry at night I usually cook a bag of broccoli.

I am staying hydrated really well. Trying to keep plenty of Protein in the diet.

Any info is appreciated.

Thanks

I'm sorry to hear about your situation, unpleasant to say the least. Maybe try something other than broccoli. Are you eating the whole bag? It may be your problem. Did you already have surgery, then, and when if so? Do you have the problem at the same general time of night? If so, maybe set your alarm for say a half hour earlier, then use the restroom. And DEFINITELY call your Dr. about it. Good luck to you, sir.

I also forgot to add that I've started taking Xanax again and that's really the only medication chance aside from the prescription anti-acid.

Shortly after surgery I must have passed gas while asleep and got more than I bargained for and had to throw away my underwear. Never trust a fart!!! Maybe that is what is happening to you?!?!?

I had surgery in October. It's only started happening in the last month and has only happened twice. I generally wake up each morning around 4am to go to the gym. I go to bed around 9pm.

Not eating the whole bag, maybe half of it if that. Around 4 to 5 ounces. The rest gets discarded.

Broccoli does cause gas. I am so glad I had a mattress cover on the bed. :( It's a brand new mattress. I think I'm going to buy a second cover just to be safe and sure and put two of them on it. The cover has saved me twice now.

It's good to have a couple of mattress covers, especially the water-proof kind. I think I would still change from broccoli to something else, just to SEE if it changes your situation. And I am NOT being insulting here, but maybe get some Depends for men, so you don't have to change the bedding so much. I think you can get them online if you want to keep it private. Have a good evening.

Not insulted at all. It is something I've thought about. I'm out of Broccoli so I'm going to kick that for a few weeks. It's been a great filler.

Just checked out Amazon.com, they carry Depends and other brands. If you are a prime member, you can get them in 2-3 days. Found them in the Health and Personal Care section. I used similar items for different surgeries over the years when I couldn't get out of bed. They truly serve a purpose.

Just a thought, are you getting in enough Protein? Protein tends to be constipating, so if you mix a protein with the Fiber (broccoli), it may help balance things out. Eat the protein first. I know the fiber-foods are filling, but protein is, also (very dense, thus takes a lot to digest it, so it also takes time to digest it --it will stay with you longer).

I never had the soiling myself when asleep.. but I've definitely had some untrustworthy gas moments during the day-especially early on after surgery when I was having lots of liquid and Protein shakes. I'd be running to the toilet during the last swallow. I switched to string cheese instead of Protein Shakes and other binding foods. Bananas are good, too. I'd be careful with the broccoli-that stuff is notorious for getting the system moving. Sometimes people just get diarrhea when they drastically change their diet. And if you think about it proportionally, broccoli probably makes up like 30% of diet-which is a lot.

I've also had the aspirating stomach acid/vomit in the middle of the night and it was TERRIFYING the first time it happened. Now I just take an antacid and avoid eating right before bed. It has only happened when I eat before sleeping. I think the first time it was something with hot sauce...bad idea.

After I posted this, I sent a text to my Dr. and I didn't expect him to reply today but he did. He called me and we had a long convo. He said with the amount of Broccoli I'm eating that it is likely causing it and he said the same thing, that it gets it moving. He said that my stomach is smaller now and I process foods a lot faster.

He said to avoid the Broccoli and if it still happens then to see him this week and he also said to avoid food right before bed which I've learned the hard way.

I am hoping this is all it is. My mind went right to stomach cancer. :(

Wow! A doctor replying on a weekend, let alone a Sunday! I AM impressed! And I'm so glad for you that he did, and about what he said. Sounds like you're on your way, and hopefully no more troubles for you! Here's a hint I use: Cottage cheese (1/2 cup) for my evening snack. Lots of Protein, and no "problems"! All the best to you....

He's also a customer of mine, so I kinda maybe slightly abused the fact that I had his cell. He didn't seem to mind.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
