NSV (Non Scale Victories)

Recommended Posts

As to weighing -- that's a personal choice. I can completely see the wisdom in weighing infrequently or not-at-all if you're easily discouraged.

OTOH, I always say, "If there's GOOD news, I want to know it ASAP!"

I weigh every morning between the first trip to the bathroom and the first trip to the fridge. Sure -- there are plenty of days I'm frustrated. BUT, I can then channel that frustration. It makes the difference between putting on my shoes to go walk right THEN or postponing it and possibly not getting it in at all that day. Likewise, if I've seen PROGRESS :whoo: on the scales that morning, it's easier to make the healthiest possible choices all day long.

Hope that made sense.

You've got some good advice there! But I am one who used to weigh daily, if not twice a day, and this time, I am only weighing myself when I see the doctor each month. I am not "easily discouraged" but I refuse to allow a number on the scale to be the only important measure of my success, especially when that number is not really a good indication of my progress. It's terribly unreliable due to daily, if not hourly, fluctuations in Water retention and whatever else is going on inside of me. And for that reason, I don't want to use it as a motivator either. I want to be motivated whether the scale says I'm gaining, losing, or no change. It's too easy to use that number as an excuse for bad behavior, too.

Yes, I want to see that number go down because, like it or not, that's the "currency" of weight loss. But rather than see all the little ups and downs, I'd rather see a bigger loss once a month. And if there's no loss in a month's time, then I can be pretty sure that it's time to make a change, whether it's exercise or a fill or food choices rather than wondering if I'm on a plateau after three days.

Now, that said, I did weigh myself the other day, about two weeks after I was last weighed at my one-week post-op appointment. And I was pleased that I am losing weight, which I already knew based on how I look and how my clothes are fitting. But I have no idea how my scale compares to the doctor's scale so I won't post it or consider it official until my next doctor's visit on December 14. I lost 70 pounds four years ago and it is such a relief for me to forget about the scale and focus on other indicators this time! When I get to the point that I am not seeing the doctor monthly, then I will start weighing myself at home, probably no more than once a week.

Last night I was sitting on the couch with my hubby and absentmindedly playing with my wedding rings...they felt so loose. So then for kicks, I started shaking my hand and the rings fell right off!! Cool! Er, unless I lose them! :)

I can't believe that I'm posting this, since it's so personal, but it's a big deal for me and I feel comfortable on this board...

When dh and I were intimate over the weekend, I was able to get into a position that we haven't been able to make work in about 2 years due to my weight.:biggrin1:

it's so worth giving up diet coke, bread and pizza

:) Awesome NSV!!!

So i've noticed that working 8 hours n my feet doesn't bother me anymore:heh:

:ranger:

I run into everything with my boobs (sorry guys). My stomach is not out there to be my bouncer/buffer any more. I hit people with them, walls and everything else that gets near. It's a little embarrassing :)

Also, I LOVE crossing my legs now. I do it ALL the time!!!

This doesnt sound like such a bad thing:)

Yes, I too can feel my hip bones...they still have some padding on them but they are under there. I found it yesterday when I was standing with my leather binder sort of resting on my hip. I was in a customers office. They were talking to me and I was not listening at all, I just wanted to say "feel this..its a hip bone"!!!

That wouldn't have been good!:P

Here's a good NSV -- for ME anyhow!

I'm not exercising today.

BUT -- it's because I'm TOO BUSY and not because I DON'T WANT TO!!!

I'm actually MISSING the gym on days I can't go!

How wild is THAT!

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
