Hey All!

I need some advice. I'm scheduled to get sleeved May 4 and I have my pre-op appointment April 29th. I don't have a liquid diet either. Has anyone else ever experienced this?

I do want to follow some sort of pre-op diet, I was advised to continue what I've been doing which is 1200 calorie diet and low fat...which doesn't seem enough for pre-op diet.

Thanks for any advice!

Are you doing self-pay? If so, there doesn't seem to be as many hoops to jump through. Also, it depends on your particular situation, such as your starting weight. If you are not comfortable with this ASK THEM!!!! You paid for their service, so make sure you get what you need and want from it. Good luck to you!

No I'm not self pay, my insurance UHC is paying ???? I called today and she said no. She said if my bmi was in the 50's they would but I'm in the 40's. I want everything to go as well as possible, Im going to google some pre-op diets and follow one of those.

That makes me feel better! I still am thinking about a week of pre op diet.

I was over 400lbs and didn't have a pre-op diet. I made it a point to increase my Protein and eat well, but otherwise I didn't do anything special. I was already active at the gym and I continued with that. The day before was clear liquid then NPO after midnight. I had the easiest surgical experience and my post op has been easy as well.

I think it all depends on your insurance and the bariatric center and what they both require. Im 1 week out. My BMI was around 40 as well. I did not have to do a liquid diet either, just the 1200 cal diet. BUT I did do a 3 day liquid diet right before the surgery anyway just becuase I wanted to be safe and also start shrinking my liver which supposedly makes sugery eaiser.

I'm on track to be sleeved in June and my Bariatric center has me on a high Protein 1500 calorie diet. That is my pre-op diet. They said there's no need for the extreme liquid diet and everyone does it differently. I'm glad, I was not looking forward to that!

My Doctor recommends clear liquids only the day before. He said the reasons for this is because they found the clear liquid diet for a week out you in a state of malnutrition and that U need the nourishment to heal faster.

Everything that I have read says 2 weeks prior to surgery Protein Shakes & liquids only. So I do think this is a little strange that they did not give you a pre-op diet. My info says it is to minimize the fat cells in the stomach area at the time of surgery to make the surgery easier.

Hey, My surgery is April 13 and I was told to go on a clear liquid diet a day before. I been drinking Proteins shakes about once a day now and sometimes I dont. I had the lapband put in 2011 and removed 2014 and even at that point I didn't have to go a preop liquid diet. Some Drs are different.

My nutritionist has me on a diet, but it isn't all liquids... It consists of a Protein Shake for 2 meals and a 3oz Protein and non starchy vegetable as one meal... I'm allowed a snack of Peanut Butter and celery if I need one. I will probably go on a liquid diet at least 3 days prior to surgery on my own... If anything I would at least do liquids the day before surgery!

My surgeon's pre-op diet is on a case-by-case basis.

Some folks have to do three weeks of 3-5 shakes per day, and it gets less severe from there. For example, he told me to do 5 days of 2-3 shakes a day with dinner of less than 400 calories. Finally, on the day before surgery, it's Clear Liquids.

Just another way that we all have our own unique journey :)

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
