2 Days Post Open Severe Nausea

Recommended Posts

The bad thing about having surgery at the end of the week is that you are pretty much on your own over the weekend. The on call surgeons seem put out. The first time I called she was downright rude. My daughter is 18 so she is really young for this surgery but all of her specialists recommended this to help her numerous health issues. The surgeon was like, "well I don't understand why she can't talk to me" when I told her she was in so much pain that she couldn't talk. She was very short with me and dare I say bitchy. The second time I called there was a new surgeon on call and he was a little nicer. So... It makes me not want to call again. I wouldn't be bothering them if I didn't think this was serious.

The only think that helped get rid of the nausea was through IV. They hydrated me and put the pain meds through the IV. In a few hours my system settled down where I was able to sip.

I was still in hospital, but had all the same symptoms hiccuping dry heaving constantly. They told me I would be fine but I finally fought for the IV to go back in and give me the meds through the IV and it finally stopped the vomiting cycle. You can't really move on to recovery when the nausea is that bad. I feel for her. It is all consuming.

If she is throwing up, this is not a good sign and does not want this happening as can tear the staples they used.

If her surgeon won't do anything, i would definately go to the nearest ER and they may have to use IV to help stop the nausea and also to help get fluids in.

I had anti nausea in my IV in the hospitals and was prescribed zofran. Eating ice chips helped a lot.

She also had iv zofran and a stronger one that knocked her out but didn't touch the nausea. Were in the ER right now. She was pretty much passed out on the floor after trying to shower. We spent 45 mins in the waiting room with her slumped over in a wheelchair. Unacceptable!

I had severe chest pain whenever I would drink anything for the first 3 days after surgery. My surgeon told me it was esophageal spasms and would go away after a few days. He was right. I guess they are caused by swelling from the surgery and when anything hot or cold hit the esophagus, I thought I was going to die. That could be what your daughter is having and why the surgeons aren't as concerned. I know it felt like I was dying and no one seemed to care. The biggest issue is dehydration, so hopefully it will stop soon and she will at least stay hydrated.

Just curious if she had a hiatal hernia repair. I did and the "lump in the throat" thing persisted for about 2 weeks.

No, she didn't have a hernia repair.

The ER yesterday gave her IV fluids, morphine, phenigrine shot for nausea and a GI cocktail. She felt much better last night and was able to drink fluids and even had some broth.

Unfortunately today she is back to nausea and pain.

Call the doctor back. Tell them you think she needs to be admitted so they can run test for a blockage. If they hem and haw, ask to speak to the program chef. It sounds like the ER is treating the symptoms. You need to find out the source of the problems. I'd rather get her checked out to be on the safe side.

If everything checks out then you can try tough love and explain she's going to have to help herself by trying to work through some of this pain. She needs to take the pain meds so she can start to get better.

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
