4th day post-op Gas pain, its very bad

Recommended Posts

I'm so sorry you are feeling the gas pain. Honestly, there is no quick fix. You just have to walk, walk, walk and maybe, if your doc okays it, take some Motrin to take the edge off.

It will get better, just try to hang in there....

According to some of the threads that I've read people have taken the GasX thin strips that dissolve on your tongue (so I brought me a pack for my surgery), I've also read to walk and drink as much Water as possible, and my favorite was go and get a message, so before I return to work if the pain is still there then I will be at the spa. I hope it gets better. I don't know how to add the links on this message so you may just want to browse a couple of pages back and see what you find. Keep me posted.

I found that the pain medication (Oxycodone) caused Constipation, and difficulty with passing gas. I walked as much as I could, and drank warm tea. As soon as I could, I cut down on the frequency of taking the pain medication. I was miserable for about 5 days until everything "passed".

It does get better - I am 2 weeks post-op. Good luck to you.

Hi Donna

I was banded June 1st (a week ago)... today is the first day that (touch wood) I've had no gas pain in my left shoulder... Yee Ha!!!

I don't think that anything helps, you just have to live through it knowing that it will go away soon... I did found that if I drank my liquids too quickly I would have a severe attack almost immediatley... so remember to sip slowly :-)

Good luck and hang in there!

I am in the process of having the lap band. My insurance requires 3 mons of Dr. regulated dieting. My surgeon is going to be Dr. Oliak. I am supposed to see his dietian and start a low cal diet. Did anyone eles have to do this? Has anyone out there used Dr. Oliak?:)

walk...walk....and walk.....I had to remember this from my days as a nurse when I made others walk after laproscopic surgeries that had gas pains.....you've got to wake up your systems! And unfortunately anesthesia and then of course all the pain medicine we put in our bodies we keep it asleep!

My gas is better on the 5th day....but on the 3rd and 4th days it certainly helped to walk....

Good luck!

I was in your shoes last Monday!!! WOW!!! The worst pain I have EVER felt. Our friends here on lapbandtalk really know their stuff!! I got the same advice everyone is giving you. . walk walk walk. . .when you're not walking, try a heating pad. Warm liquids help to ease the pain. RKidder is right. . the pain medication will cause gas as well, so ease off of it as soon as possible (I stopped taking it 2 days post op). I too prefer chewables over the strips, however the stage of gas you are in, none of it will help much (at least it didn't for me). The thing that DID help (that I hadn't seen mentioned before), was laying on my side. Prop a pillow or blanket under your belly, and just lay on your side. It helped sooooooo much!!! I was able to start passing gas (sorry, but hey. . it had to go somewhere), and by the next morning, all was fine and I haven't had issues with it since!!! Hang in there! It hurts, but it WILL pass (no pun intended!! well. . maybe just a little)!!! God luck!!!

I learned this from another poster when I was having terrible shoulder pain. Get on your hands and knees. Chin on the ground with your butt high in the air. I go a bit further and kneel on an ottoman and put my head all the way on the ground. It supposedly gives a route to get the bubbles away from the inflamed area. All I know is it works like magic – normally I’ve got relief in about a minute. I know it sounds silly nut you’ve got nothing to lose!

I was convinced that my surgeon dislocated my shoulder and broke one of my ribs that is how much pain I was in from gas. Today is day 14 for me and for the past 4 days no more gas pain!!! I tried the gas-x strips, the nurse at my office said you could use 4 at a time if needed. Don't worry the pain WILL go away!!!

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
