Anyone else ever shop at DXL?

Recommended Posts

As a gentleman of generous proportions, I do find it necessary to shop at the DXL. I'm not proud of it, but this is my reality and until I can get down to a smaller size this is the way it will be. I've come to accept that. I went there recently for some new clothes. As I walk in, I am immediately greeted by a very nice associate welcoming me to the store and offering to assist me in helping me find what I need. Now in my warped mind, I'm thinking this guy is calling me out in public for being in the "fat store" when in reality probably isn't the case. BTW, there are two places that come to mind where I do not want my presence announced upon entering, the Megaplexxx and DXL. I politely decline his assistance and go off to look for something on my own. He comes back around several times asking if I need anything, or if he could help me find a certain size. That was a deal breaker, because it would involve having to divulge my size to him. No way. He was very nice and very helpful, but when I go there I just want to be invisible so I can shop in shame. I know there is online shopping, but sometimes you need something right away, and just want to be able to go to store and buy it. I'm really looking forward to shopping in regular stores again.

@Jerr-Bear I feel your shame. I am a creature of habit. I buy the same pants, underwear, shoes and socks. This might be bland shopping habits, but I detest even going into a store to buy clothes. I have been lucky to purchase my 'fat clothes' on line, and fear now that I am post op, that I will have to do it all over again. Good luck with your journey!

I've been a long time shopper at DXL. I've always liked their polos, button down short sleeve shirts, cargo shorts and graphic tees. It's good quality stuff but it definitely comes at a cost. Now that I've been sleeved I look forward to never having to limit myself or shop in that store again.

On a different note. My favorite jeans come from Duluth Trading Co.

I used to shop there a lot when they were called Casual Male and their prices were more reasonable.

They decided to try and move upmarket, and increased their prices to match. I stopped shopping there at that point. It just wasn't affordable any more.

A shame really, us men of generous size already have a limited selection of clothing retailers.

@@Jerr_Bear - I hated shopping for clothes - nothing ever fit fight. I always felt the clothes at the big guys stores were too "big for me" and regular clothes were always too small and tight. In retrospect, the big guys clothes were probably the right size - it was my embarrassment in not wanting to shop there.

Now - I fit comfortably in a large shirt and 34 / 36 pants - what a difference it makes in shopping and enjoying what I wear now that the clothes fit properly.

Keep up the good fight- you'll get there!

I hear the underwear from there is quite comfy.

So I've heard, but at $22+ a pair I'll stick to the 4 pack of Kirkland boxer briefs from costco. Those are comfy as well.

i do all my shopping at dxl but do most of it online. when i do go into the store i go directly to the harbor bay pocket tshirts, grab how ever many 5x i want in various colors and check out! i never let anyone assist me because i already know what fits me how i like it to. i so look forward to shopping at normal stores as well!

I will say there's one gentleman at my local CasualMaleXL (the western branch of DXL) who will simply not leave me alone. I have recently told him outright that "I think you and I simply have too divergent of ideas about what looks good on me for us to work together." I did recently find though that one of the female employees who never approaches me, when I ask he for help is phenomenal!

I've shopped similar stores to DXL. I think they mean well. I was a bit like that at first because I didn't want to share all my size business with them. I finally decided it didn't matter. They work with a ton of big guys all the time. They don't want to offend me, just trying to help. I started giving them a chance to help when I actually need their help. Otherwise, I politely let them know "I'm good!"

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.
