How many people kept Weight Loss Surgery a secret ?

Recommended Posts

i have not kept it a secret as such, as most ppl in my circle have known about my health problems for some time and while I only have told my family and close aunt/uncle and friends and colleagues (close) about my sleeve, it doesn't mean that if anyone should ask me or tell me that i'm looking great that I wont share this info. I am more than happy to advise them of what I have done as everyone knew I had the lapband and everyone knew that I had a terrible time with it for such a long time (4 years) - I had the revision done last year to sleeve.. and life is just so good!!

attachicon.gifImageUploadedByBariatricPal1426041494.066725.jpg. My before and after I still got a little more to lose but all and all down 125 since 2/12/14

Wow you have really shrunk, that little tattoo now covers your whole arm! :D

I've just got back to work and everyone knows. Talked to one friend last night and friends -of-friends know. Talked to my dad and divorced ex-relatives know. It doesn't take long for word to spread .

Got to hear of one persons comment and it was how just abouth how much it cost (mine was done for free by NHS, UK under national healthcare), so I doubt it was positive! This is someone I see about once every 4 years so who cares what other people think? B)

I kept it quiet at first.

After a while it becomes obvious that something is going on and you get tons of questions on how you are doing it. I usually just said "eating better, eating less" to the casual enquiries. If I felt like sharing, I might say more. I have only rarely been asked directly about surgery. In those cases I say, something along the lines of "well yeah, I thought that was obvious".

I told my team at work, my family and close friends, stopping short of a Facebook announcement, lol. Here's the deal, I have a THICK SKIN. I don't much care what others think if they're not on my side in this battle for my health. I'm sure I have a few haters, but I've seen VERY LITTLE in the way of negativity around my decision to have surgery. I have GREAT FRIENDS. And maybe acquaintances are "afraid" of me. LOL. Anyway, how will we ever move past the stigma if we don't educate people? Being open has afforded me the privilege of being an example for others who are struggling and mentoring some of them through their decision to have the procedure and take control of their health. Having people know, keeps me on track because I'm an example to those who need it and I'll be damned if I'm gonna let a hater see me fail! THAT is simply not happening! Being fabulous is the BEST revenge!

Maybe you could "test the waters" with this friend, before you tell him (her) to see how they respond. One suggestion would be to ask if they've noticed you've lost weight (they will, it's inevitable!), and tell them (which is true) that you're watching what you eat, and are exercising, to see how they respond to that. Then tell them what a challenge it has been for you to lose weight over the years, and sometimes it takes drastic measures to get the results you need. Then, depending on their response, you can determine how much more you want to reveal to them. Especially if they have or have not been supportive to your efforts to this point. The best part is, YOU get to decide whether to bestow upon them the HONOR of knowing the serious and devoted commitment you have to losing this unwanted weight! By then you will undoubtedly be so proud of your accomplishments, you may be just singing to the world about your surgery, because afterall, others may take the cue from you to have the surgery, which will help them also to get control over their weight! Good luck with your surgery!

I haven't told too many people. My husband had told everyone at work so I'm not sure why I don't go ahead. I may in a few weeks

I go back to work tomorrow and have only lost 12 pounds so far, so it won't be terribly obvious at first. After this stall is over and the weight starts coming off again, I know I will get questions. I am a very private person and I really don't want to discuss it. I'm just going to tell people that I am moving a lot more and eating a lot less. More than that is just not their business.

I told my family, both sides, and my 3 colleagues- we're a little group, like family (closer than some of my dorky family, actually and together 23 years!) I told a lot of people about my band thinking it would add accountability. Sincce the band was a flop ive been more cautious this time with the sleeve. Those who do know are completely supportive. I've never heard a single negative comment - maybe I'm blissfully oblivious- and assume!ing I'm successful with the sleeve I won't have a problem telling other people. Down the line.

Only my immediate family, and no one else. None of their business. When they ask what I am doing I explain it's no carbs other than some fruit and veggies, no sugar, no soda diet or otherwise, lots of Water and more activity., which not for nothing it is. The sleeve keeps me from eating way too much, and also helps me get through stalls that otherwise would just lead me back to eating garbage and feeling like a failure. The sleeve supports the knowledge that a stall is only a stall, and not my body "telling" me to give up because I won't lose. I am beyond thrilled at the results!

I have been pretty open. I have told family, co-workers, friends, work clients that I visit. I have only one person express concern. I understand where she is coming from. She unexpectedly lost her husband a couple of months before. She was concerned about the surgery risks. She also knew 2 people that ate around their by-passes. But she was the first to offer to go walking with me as part of my post-op exercise program.

Everybody else has been supportive.

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.
