Why I am in love with my Lap-Band

Recommended Posts

@@bel1995 I was never given a goal weight. I chose for myself what felt right. I remember setting goals in increments for myself, as having 100 pounds to lose seemed an insurmountable amount go weight, and I was happy my surgeon didn't give me that goal or I might have been discouraged.

@@bel1995 Hmmmm.... if you get the sense your specialist is 'dodgy' it could well be a strong and correct instinct. Maybe see if there are other options out there.

When I first considered weight loss surgery I contacted and had a consult with an Agency in Toronto. High pressure sales tactics led me to actually book a surgery date and pay a deposit.

In the weeks that followed, something wasn't sitting well with me about this place. I started doing intensive research on the web looking for evidence to support my gut suspicions that this was a sketch organization, and WHAMMO did I ever find the info I was looking for.

Long story short, I ended up jumping ship and going with a private medical clinic with a stellar reputation, superb surgeons and a terrific track record of lap-band success. Making the tough decision to abandon a poor provider for a good one was the greatest act of self care I think I've ever committed.

No regrets!

Thanks for your reply. maybe i felt this way as his bedside mannerisms wernt as good as some but those that have had surgery seem happy with him. hes got alot of experience and masters in it also a lecturer at university so the surgery experience is well up there. i do thi k theres a small part of me that is abit concerned.

surgery is tomorrow i am scared. is there a sore throat afterwards? and the port hole? i am so scared of needles.

That's exiting!!!! The only thing I would recommend is to ask for stool softners they should give you that anyway but incase they don't ask! You will be sorry if you don't use them. Also you're going to have gas pains buy gas x and walk. Walking is the only thing that makes it go away. My left hand hurt after surgery but it went away within a couple of hours. Also, you will need someone to help you get up from bed make sure someone is available to help. I wish you the best of luck it's so exiting! Let us know in your progress!

Oh I didn't have a sore throat afterwards I felt fine the port feels weird. My port never hurt. The fills don't hurt either they're uncomfortable but they don't hurt. The worst is the first 3 days after surgery because of the gas but you need gas x and to walk. I'm telling you walking is the only thing that works. I wish I would have known about walking when I had the surgery it would have saved me a lot of headaches and tears. Good luck on your big day!

Good luck bel1995! Did you watch the "All of me" movie? It can give you so confort and straingh. My feeling is "I don't want to be one of the girls that cannot even walk and I will pass through whatever is needed to change the direction of my journey (that today is in full speed up)". I am going for my first consultation on 2/2/16 and I can't wait to get over it. Everything will be allright. Focus on the result.

@@bel1995 So?! How did it go?

Sorry I didn't respond before now - ! By now you are on the other side - - welcome to a whole new chapter in your life. Be good to yourself over the next few days as you do the hard work of recovering from the surgery and getting rid of that gas. Yes, this too shall pass - !

Be careful with your incision sites. As for Water, keep drinking constantly in tiny sips. sip, sip, sip.... and be sure to have someone by your side to help you get to and from the toilet, help you with your meds.. whatever you need, Gas-X did the trick for me - dissolvable strips. Very helpful indeed...!

Also, pillows. Tons and tons of pillows in my bed. I slept almost sitting up the first couple of nights and that helped was e the discomfort. Walking is great advice (I simply couldn't but I know it worked for others!) so if you can, do.

Welcome to the rest of your life... it all starts now. So excited for you! ((HUG))

Hi there

I Am finding this site confusing sometimes so just replied to someonw in this post above lol.

I am alive! The surgery went well & surprisingly the surgeon said i had a hiatus hernia which would have caused severe heart burn with the band so he has fixed it :)

You are certainly not wrong about the gas pain omfg! Was radiating bad through my shoulders back and chest that us more painful than the incisions!

Following surgery most uncomfy was the gas pains they are still there but slowly going. A hot Water bottle has relieved it tremendously. Its the medical gas that they put between your organs so much longer to bring up. I have not felt nausea at all not even after surgery which i am happy about.

Could you please help me i have lost mu post op liquid diet sheets. For the first two weeks what should i eat? So far today i have had broth, diet jelly, coffee, herbal clear tea & Water. Just took it slowly with each. Hopefully i havent had too much as i dont know how many mls i should have.

In my freezer i made up very thin vegetables and chicken Soup and froze them pre surgery - is it ok to have the chicken and vegetables Soup its water thin as i am confused when they say no meat or vegetable.

Thank you so much for taking the time to contact me and share your experience i really appreciate it.

@@bel1995 Yes, I had the same repair done while I was getting banded. A had a massive double hiatus hernia that has caused me brutal heartburn for a year... i never knew.

Over a year now of being banded and my heartburn has completely disappeared. Yay!

Do NOT rush solids... stay on clear fluids/full fluids... whatever you were told. Contact your surgeon asap and get the staff to email you the post-op instructions as it is vital that you don't do things out of order.

You are healing right now, so you want to limit the peristalsis (contractions) of your lower esophagus as much as possible. As soon as solid hits the band, you will automatically begin those contractions to push it through. This is great once you have healed enough to reach that stage, but right now it's a no-no. No matter how small those vegetable or chicken chunks may seem, you do NOT want to put your surgical site through contractions as it is still healing.

Best thing - get in touch with your surgical team and get your hands on another copy of your post-surgical diet.

Yay for you!

I think after surgery I waited a week for solids and when I began eating solids I wasn't 100% sure I felt okay so I went back to liquids for another 4 days. Like the Proffessor said don't rush into solids let your band heal and you'll avoid unnecessary problems. When I was on the liquid diet I would have sugar free Jello, liquid sugar free yogurt, broth (chicken, fish, beef). Take your time I know it's so frustrating to only be on liquids but it's for your own good. People that struggle with the band didn't follow the directions and had complications. You went through the hard part already just make it easier on yourself and avoid slowing down your healing processby eating solids. In the grand scheme of things what's another week on liquids. Right? When you call your dr ask about your Vitamins when is it ok to start on them. I am sooo exited for you!!!

Four days post surgery. I am sipping as fast as I can and getting NO WHERE near the goal of 60 - 80 grams of protein or the 64 oz of liquids. I just feel FULL. I don't know if it can still be the gas build up (I would think by now that would be gone) but it is a struggle to drink. And so far I have not had the nausea or spasms and don't want to wander into that territory by pushing too hard with liquids. I about passed out today as it was my most "strenuous" day. Went from second story to basement for shower and I was sure I was going to pass out. Looking back on my last few days I have had a total of less than 1000 calories. Am I just not getting enough nourishment in me? Once again a friday where I can't get ahold of the doc until Monday rolls back around so I am hoping maybe someone here has some experience on how to keep energy going. I do have fibromyalgia too and that may be where some added fatigue comes into play. How did you all fair with the goals the week after surgery?

2 days until I fly out to San Diego to have my Bypass Surg. in Tiajuana Mexico. Not gonna lie, the nerves are starting to surface. I don't fear the surgery itself, or the fact that I'm traveling alone, but its the aftermath that I'm stressing about the most, after this 8 week wait. I'm excited to finally be here, but I am really dreading the post surgical chapter. I know its going to be tough, real tough and I think I'm just in my head to much now that the day i here. Wish me luck, Hopefully I'm one of the lucky ones, and everything goes smoothly. Cant wait to give an exciting update,. If there is anyone else have a June bypass or even a recent one, Id love to have someone to compare war stories with. Also, anyone near San Antonio Tx? See ya soon with the future me. 💜

I am back home after my bypass surgery in Tiajuana. I'm post op day 4. Everything went great! I guess I'm one of the lucky ones who have not encountered much pain at all, no nausea thus far and I'm having no problem keeping down broths and water. Thank you for your well wishes. I cant wait to keep up this journey and have a chance at better health and simply better quality of life. I know there will be bumps in the road ahead, and everything won't be peaches and cream, but at least I have a great start so far. 😍

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!
