Can I use a post op diet to use weight without surgery

Recommended Posts

My pre-op diet was a 10 day liquid only diet, my daily intake: 3 Protein shakes, broth, herbal tea, Water flavored with lemon & mint leaves, 1 Jello if I needed something extra. My daily Protein intake was 90-100 grams and my daily calorie intake was around 500/day. I lost 17.5 pounds in 10 days. After the first 2-3 days I felt great and rarely felt hungry. While I do not recommend doing this long-term, you could do a 7-10 day liquid diet to jump start your new lifestyle and then opt for a low carb, high protein clean diet (lean & green), such as Paleo, South Beach, Atkins.< /p>

In the meantime, pick up some insurance through the Affordable Healthcare Act and maybe you can have surgery later this year or early next year.

Good luck with whatever you decide to do - losing weight is not easy no matter which road you take!

@brian45502@brian45502 You can do whatever you please BUT for some of us like myself the small amounts of food I eat now would NEVER have worked for me pre-op. I would have felt like I was starving and surly would be miserable. I can only speak for myself but the surgery works for me in two major ways 1. I feel satiated with a small amount of food 4-5 bits 2. I don't have a hunger sensor anymore so I never "feel" hungry. These two Are not "normal" for a person who has not had surgery. I could almost promise you you will not be happy on my amount of food.

Do weight watchers or Atkins or paleo or something. It makes little sense to eat a post op diet as it will be very hard to be comfortable if you haven't had WLS.

Brian, I had my surgery in Mexico. You stay there for 4 days so they can monitor you and check your sleeve for leaks. Now not to be harsh cold or cruel, but why do you need to have a follow up visit with the surgeon?? You will never see the surgeon again whether here or in Mexico. What post op care do you need?? Do you need to pay a doctor to monitor your progress and weigh yourself........no certainly not. Some people will agree with me and some will disagree. Is going to Mexico a safe place to go to save yourself thousands of dollars.......yes indeed!!! I do not regret going there to have it done. I didnt have $18,500 to have it done in Shreveport,La and with airfare I spent $4600. Good luck in your journey my friend!!!! My prayers go out to you that you find the answers that you are looking for!!!

I lost thirty pounds before surgury. By following a diet plan that was essentially a post op diet.

I think it is doable, but there are so many other changes that the surgery does & science is still trying to figure it all out- the surgery is more that just restriction- there are hormone changes, changes in your gut bacteria (yes skinny people have different intestinal bacteria!), it gives you a "reset" & you don't go into "starvation mode" with metabolism shutting down like regular dieting can do. Diet wise, do something you can stick to for the long haul (moderation), get rid of as much processed foods as you can & of course move/exercise more & good luck!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
