Regular Food Anyone?! Crybaby on Deck!

Recommended Posts

I'm so sick of drinking Protein shakes! I didn't have this surgery to drink Protein shakes and eat chicken, or basically low carb for the rest of my life!! I knew I would have to drink shakes and eat protein during the healing phase but at what point does the healthy diet come into play?

The reason for my tantrum today is that I'm 7 weeks post op, 44 pounds down 28 since surgery (need to update my stats) and have lost a pound a week for the last three weeks. And this week, nothing! I'm so tired of having to focus on this. I've been working out three times a week and I expected to see results, fruits of my labor so to speak! I know to some of you it sounds completely unreasonable but I'm still a newbie so let me have this one! I want a salad and fruit and Soup but it doesn't matter what I eat this last week or so, I've not lost more than a pound.

I surely hope at six months out I'm further along than I am now. Do I feel 100% better, absolutely, do I look better, surely and those two things alone make it worth it but I guess I never thought I'd still be 236 pounds since I feel like I'm basically starving.

Thank you vets for letting me rant, but I feel like this is a full time job, worrying about Water, weight, eating and I'm just frustrated today.

We can all relate to your feelings. It seems unfair that we do what we're supposed to do and our bodies decide to take a break from weight loss. It's no fun, but I think it's pretty much inevitable. We are not machines and there are a lot of complex interactions going on inside us. Go ahead and rant when you need to, but don't let yourself get discouraged. If you stay on track with your diet and exercise, a month or two from now you're going to be amazed at your progress.

As far as the need to prioritize Protein and avoid carbs, we all know that is the price of admission when we start, what we don't know is how it's going to feel months down the road. I feel you on that point, too. But I think you will agree with me that the end results are worth the effort. And don't forget that when you get to maintenance, you'll be adding in more vegetables, fruits and even some occasional starches. Hang in there.

You said " I didn't have this surgery to drink Protein shakes and eat chicken, or basically low carb for the rest of my life!! "

Seriously?? did you not know that is exactly what you will be doing for the rest of your life? This isnt a temporary fix where you do some dieting then go back to regular eating and all is well. You are going to have to change your lifestyle and eating habits forever or all this is nothing. I am a bit surprised you don't realize this. Maybe it's just a rant and I am reading into it, but if not, you need to reevaluate what you want out of this and what your willing to do to get it.

You Can Do This!

Pity parties are part of the program. Say that 5 times fast! Lol. Hang in there. I'm just 3 m out and have had many days like yours today, but just stay with the program and remember every month or two you get to add more food to your program. It will get better!????

I am 3 months post-op today and I eat whatever I want and have for at least a month. That being said, I do eat a healthy diet. I have salads almost every day and Proteins such as chicken, cheese, salmon, etc. I also have a small piece of dark chocolate every day without problems also.

Are you having a hard time with these foods?

@oatmealgirl I understand your pain. I get that way a lot when I get tired of eating meat eggs and cheese all the time. I miss my breads and it gets harder and harder to avoid them because its frustrating that you are so limited now. But we need this! We have to stick to it to get where we want to be. Not saying we aren't going to mess up and eat things we shouldn't but you just have to get back on that Protein packed horse the next day. It will be ok just keep your eyes on the prize!!

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
