Reducing Acid

Recommended Posts

Hi, I was sleeved 12/1/14 and never really experienced acid reflux until after my surgery. Since I've been on solids, had to deal with an acidic stomach especially at night. Right now the only thing I'm doing to ease the feeling is Special K crackers or club crackers. Oh and too much Calcium has already given me a kidney stone, so taking a lot of o-t-c acid reducers isn't a good idea because of the calcium.

Any suggestions as too what I can do to help with the acid. Don't want to mess with my weight loss either.

Thank you

The PPI works best for me. I didn't have any problems with acid until I was on solid food again. I find I need to head it off at the pass. I get it at night so if I take 40mgs omeprazole (prescription strength) I am usually fine for the evening. I'm not sure what other alternatives you have other than avoiding highly acidic foods like citrus, spicy foods and tomatoes. Perhaps give you nutritionist a call and see if they can recommend something.

I was automatically prescribed 40 mg of Omeprazole for the first two months post-op. My surgeon prescribes it for all his sleeve patients. At two months I was to go off of it and see how things went. I started having reflux issues right away when I went off of it, so I am now on the over-the-counter dosage of 20 mg per day and that seems to be keeping it at bay.

I am 3 months post op and have been on 40mg of omeprazole since 8 weeks before surgery. I tried going off of it after 2 months and had the worst heartburn I had ever experienced in my life. Now the doctor has me on it until 6 months post op. If I fail a trial at 6 months, then me and omeprazole are long term friends. My copay is cheaper than buying the 20mg tablets OTC and doubling them up. If you need it, take it. The acid can cause many problems along your GI tract.

For sure! The long-term effects of the acid are much worse than the potential long-term effects of being on the medication.

I was sleeved on 12/3 and am experiencing the same thing. I though for a day or two I was "over eating" but my eating was no different the next few days. I tried to force myself to throw up for I couldn't make that work either. But I glad I'm reading this finding out I'm not a lone. Ugh callin dr in the am for a RX

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
