Eating Disorder and getting healthy

Recommended Posts

So I'm coming clean that I have an eating disorder. For the past two or three months I have been binging and purging. I had a history of Bulimia 6 years ago during which I lost 100 lbs. I was not honest with my surgeon about it and was going to revise to the sleeve on 4/21. I made an appointment and came clean to him and he cancelled my surgery and is refusing to treat me. I have only lost 15 lbs with the band because I have been overeating and generally eating unhealthy. I spent the night in the hospital last week for these issues and its led to me getting help. I started seeing an Eating Disorder Therapist and I have been referred to a day program for Eating Disorders that meets 5 days a week. I am also going to start Over Eaters Anonymous. Right now I am trying not to focus on my calories but eating small band appropriate meals. I am hoping to implement a good exercise routine as well. I hope I am now on the path to a new healthy life and can now get good use out of this tool. Just felt the need to come clean.

I used to binge eat, but never purged, good for you for realizing you need extra help, good luck, hopefully you can find another Dr. that might help you, just be honest with them.

I am glad you're seeking some professional advice for the eating disorder. Kuddo's to you for taking that step.

I would suggest you don't give up on the band just yet. According to your profile, you just had surgery back in Aug of last year. I'd wonder, have you had any/many adjustments yet? I am just curious because you describe binge eating followed by purging. I can't imagine that being possible after your surgeon gets your band correctly adjusted.

You sound like you have a very good plan of "small band appropriate meals" and developing a exercise routine. That will pay big dividends!!

Don't be afraid to discuss with your surgeon....or a different one if necessary, your portion sizes. Once they get your band properly adjusted, along with the advice of the eating disorder therapists, I hope you find the success you want.

Best wishes and never, ever give up!

I was at 8 CCs of a 10 CC band but it was too tight and caused me too throw up a lot which escalated my bulimia. I was brought back down over time to 4 CCs. Once I get more comfortable just eating until satiated I may go to a local lap band fill center and ask for another CC or Two which I think would bring me to green. I am really forcing past being stuck and eating till I'm sick. Sometimes I purge and then return to eating. I know I have restriction. So I need to learn to work with instead of against the band. I intend to keep it and overcome this. I have been doing good the past two days, especially journaling my intake and trying to stick with a healthy meal plan.

Good for you. A day at a time.

You have a great plan in place! Use all the support and help you can get and then take it a day at a time, a meal at a time, even a bite at a time. You'll get through this! (((BIG HUGS)))

Glad you are getting help and support. I too am seeing a professional to help me with the psychological issues surrounding my relationship with food. As JustWatchMe said, 'one day at a time'.

I have been an emotional eater all my life. It's the only friend that has never left me. Heck that pizza from high school is STILL on my hips!

I worry about gaining the weight back. I wworry about cross addition. Heck, I worry about both!

But I've done OA before, just need to get serious about it again. I'm lining up therapy and an outside nutritionist. I've even enrolled in a Lifestyle Change group focused on healthy living.

I'm just hoping that by this fall when I should be due for surgery, I'll actbactually be ready for it!

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I had about 6 months between deciding to do surgery and getting scheduled. I came across the book The Pound of Cure by Dr. Matthew Weiner, a bariatric surgeon in Arizona, and started to implement some of the changes he recommended (and lost 13 lbs in the process without ever feeling deprived). The book is very simple, and the focus is on whole, plant based foods, but within reason. It's not an all or nothing approach, or going vegan or something, but focuses on improvement and aiming for getting it right 80-90% of the time. His suggestions are divided into 12 sections that you can tackle over time, perhaps one per month for a year if a person is just trying to improve nutrition and build good habits. They range from things like cutting out artificial sweetener or eating more beans to eating a pound of vegetables per day. I found it really effective pre-surgery and it's an eating style I will be working to get back to as I am further out from surgery and have more capacity. Small changes you can sustain will do the most for building good habits for life.

That sounds awesome. I'll have to check that out thanks!

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
