I am 1 month post op. U have lost 35 pounds and been doing great with my new stomach. However, today I was so hungry all day. Not head hungry, actually hungry. I made good choices all day, tuna fish, hardboiled egg, broccoli, chicken taco Soup, sugar free pudding. And then a student brought in some popcorn, I was very alarmed that I ate probably a cups worth and I didn't feel any discomfort or tightness. So far that is the mot food I have been able to eat at once. Doesn't that seem like my stomach shouldn't be able to hold that? I haven't had a day where I actually feel hungry so much. It really scared me. had anyone else had days like this? Does it pass?

A cup of popcorn by weight is about half an ounce? You didn't eat as much as you think. Next time try air popped... at least it's a whole grain.

Hunger is normal. Learning to listen to your body is weird at first. I still struggle with this, too.

It's up to you to make good food choice. A good rule is if you are hungry and it's not acid in your tummy and you've eaten what you're supposed to then drink Water. Not everyone gets sick from food. I have tolerated every thing I've tried. Some foods are slider foods. These are foods that go down easy but offer little nutritional value. Often they are carbs. Ultimately it will be up to you to make good food choice. If you feel you are eating the right things and are still hungry try eating 4 - 5 smaller meals instead of 3 or talk to you nutritionist about increasing your calories.

Are you feeling okay after eating pop-corn so soon after surgery? I was told very specifically not to eat popcorn until very far out because the kernels and little shells can be hard on your sleeve. As for the amount you ate, I wouldn't be alarmed. Popcorn has such low density that what seems like a cup would really compress down to a very small amount once it's chewed and in your stomach.

Oh gosh, I was never told anything about not eating popcorn. That does make sense though. I had no discomfort or trouble at all, guess I was lucky.

If you can eat other whole grains popcorn should be OK, too. If you aren't loading it with fat and sodium, it isn't bad for you in small portions. It IS a whole grain with actual Fiber. :-)

Everyone is just so different it hard to Say what's "normal" and not. If you weren't hurting I guess that's a good thing. I am 3 months out and have 0 hunger..ever. I don't know if it will come back or not? Maybe I'm not "normal" ;) I also don't eat a whole lot (still get most of my nutrients and Protein from shakes and Quest bars) I have no issues eating I just don't...BUT with that being said I get all my numbers in protein, Water, Vitamins, and I've yet to lose any hair...who knows we are all sooo different!

I am 2.5 months post op and I do get hungry. It is simply a matter of making good choices. I have a few sips of Protein shake or drink more Water when I have the urge to snack. It's just a matter of making good choices. I keep my diet very boring at this point, because I don't want to trigger any cravings.

Ditto what everyone else said. Stay away from popcorn, or any slider foods right now (especially ones with carbs). They go down way too easy, and can trigger even more urges to snack. Better would be first try Water, then some cheese or yogurt or even Jerky if you chew it up well and aren't adverse to a little extra salt. And I get hungry still. I'm getting better at seeing the difference between real hunger (it's time to eat!) or bored hunger (I just want to eat!)...it takes time. Some are lucky enough to not have much of an appetite. I'm not one of them :)

I was told popcorn basically dissolves, so it is not a good idea to sit down with a lot of it.

popcorn is a whole grain that is natuarally low in fat and has some Fiber. It morphs into junk food when fat and sodiun are added. Air popped corn is a decent snack.... I do eat it once in a while. In my nutrition classes popcorn (air popped) was on the "with moderation" list. If it bothers yout stomach, obviously you shouldn't eat it. Most things did bother mine but popcorn didn't. Go figure.

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
