Sudden dairy intolerance

Can we just put it out there and point out that gas really hurts after surgery? I read about dairy intolerance following surgery but the menu my doc put me on has milk and yogurt. Oh My Goodness I thought I might die. I'm going to look into dairy alternatives but yogurt and cheeses are good sources of protein (I'm 4 day post op, no meats yet - nothing thicker than yogurt right now). Any thoughts? Suggestions? Gas-x strips? Worth it? I'm trying to add protein powder into things but the bubbles from protein drinks hurt too.

I went through a lot of chewable Gas-X in the month after surgery. The problem has improved since then. Everything gets better with time!
