Dumping syndrome after nearly 2 years

Recommended Posts

I am nearly two years post op and still having dumping issues when I eat some foods. Is anyone else having these same problems? When will it go away or will it always be a problem after gastric sleeve surgery?

I am sorry for you suffering! Have you noticed if it is always the same foods? Do you think you may have developed an allergy to them? Have you stayed away from them for awhile, then gone back to see if they do it to you again? Last question...have you asked your doctor about it? I am still new to all this, having my surgery in December, so forgive me, but I am learning from you! Good luck and I hope you feel better VERY soon!

Yea it's usually anything sweet. It could just be that my stomach can't handle sweets anymore. I am not sure. I have not been to the doctor in about 5 months so I have not asked my doctor about it. I think it is one of those things that is a curse and a blessing at the same time. I am hesitant when it comes to eating or drinking anything with sugar.

It seems other people have had this issue, as well. How are you with artificial sweeteners? I personally can't stand them, but then I have never had much of a sweet-tooth. I have used Splenda in baking, but I find it dries the end result out too much AND too soon. The other types of sweeteners I just can't stand the taste of, especially stevia and the sweet-n-low stuff. Does an antacid help? Gosh, I wish I could help you. Keep us informed of how you resolve this, ok? Thanks....

@ I can have artificial sweetners just no real or pure sugars candy or sodas. So Splenda is my best friend right I use it on coffee tea cakes pies but sometimes I just want the real thing

Even the smallest amount of sugar and my stomach goes nuts. I have not tried any meds but wouldn't mind if I just knew what to take

I've heard a lot of people take Prilosec for acid, but I'm not sure about how it might work for sugar in particular. And since I have yet to take it, I can't tell you from my personal experience. I wouldn't know if you take it before or after you eat the sugar. Hopefully someone will respond to this run with some suggestions for you. If you don't mind, please let me know what you find out? Good luck, again....

I dump when I eat anything really rich like whole cream Soups, really high quality ice cream, frosting, fudge...

Either I vomit it right back up or I have instant poop Soup.

I'm glad there's no remedy or cure except avoidance. Keeps me on task. Nineteen months out, here.

@@LipstickLady you are probably right it is a good thing there is no remedy for dumping syndrome. Like I said it's a blessing and a curse but it a curse that keeps us on track and helps us avoid weight gain after surgery

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
