First thing I said after surgery was I'm freezing because the room was like ice. Next thought was I felt so nauseated that I felt I was about to get sick. Mainly this was from the anesthesia. I was lucky to never feel the physical pain anywhere in my stomach. Still haven't. We at all different and experiance things differently. Plus all Drs are different. I wasn't able to drink anything after surgery. I was allowed ice chips however only one small oz cup per your. I was on IV fluids. The next morning I had my leak check between 9am-10am and once cleared I could them have 1oz of clear liquid and I must say that first sip of apple juice was amazing! It took me a full hour to sip that one oz. by the end of the day I was up to two oz per hour.

I hope things go wonderful for you.

Why does it take so long to drink right after? Is it pain or it just wont go down?

You generally aren't allowed to have any liquids until after your leak test is completed but each surgeon is different. Also, when you are allowed to drink it can be difficult because your new sleeve is swollen and/or you have gas causing pressure in your chest when you try to swallow. Every time I tried to swallow the pressure felt like it was a giant bubble stuck behind my breastbone. That went away after 6 or 7 days.

I don't think I had a leak test. If I did I missed it. I was given ice chips in recovery and was drinking that evening.

How far out are you now and how do you feel? Can you get your Proteins in now? Cause you can get sick from not getting them in..

Im 26 days post op (3 & 1/2weeks). Since I began purée foods 2 weeks ago I've had no problems with my Protein and I do not drink Protein shakes. I mostly eat fish, eggs, yogurt, and poultry. I eat every 2-3 hours and I get around 60-80g of Protein a day which what my NUT wanted. So things are going much better.

I am a certified big baby, afraid of pain and nausea. But. I had virtually no pain. I had a slight headache and the nurse gave me IV Tylenol w/codeine . I have. NO memory of recovery rm. but when I was moved to my room I was awakened to go to rest room. My largest incision was very sore when I moved I held my hand over it.

I didn't vomit, feel nauseous , or experience any real pain. I was up and walking to bathroom every 2hrs and had ice chips and Water toward the end of my stay. I was released within23 hrs of surgery. My husband drove me home 2hrs away and as was suggested I had a pillow to hold over my incision and a quilt for warmth

SO I am sending you my good karma for your surgery. Think of me and assure yourself that surgery will be the same for you. It was far less painful than having wisdom teeth taken out.

I'm 12days post and doing great. My incision is still a tiny bit sore but hardly worth mentioning. My hardest part is staying off the scale and drinking enough h2o. Be well and breathe in my positive energy.

Paula

Again I had no pain. As I stated I felt only with nausea. My dr would allow only ice chips until the leak test. One I had the leak test again my dr ordered only one oz per your and that was all they would allow me to have. Next it was increased to two oz per hour. From what it seems to me there are a few reasons. 1- dr is forced me to slowly do things because I was post op and it wAs safer. 2- pre op I would have been able to down a glass of 16oz Water without even thinking. Directly after surgery your mind isn't in tune with the fact your new tummy can no longer hold the same amount. Had I drank a large amount I would have ended up getting sick and that would have been hard on the new stomach and risked complications. So slow is good. Another thing is the stomach is a bit swollen from the surgery itself. From the recovery room forward your stomach will need time to heal. That's why Drs provide with various food phases. This provides you with the chance to learn how to eat and drink again. It is all new post op and going slowly give you a chance to learn the new "full" feeling. Your tummy just needs a chance to heal and regroup post op. And I'm still healing/learning. It's a slow process and that's ok. Never try to rush things. Your body will tell you if your not ready. I know mine sure did :)

@@JerseyJules,

Was not trying to scare you. It was just unexpected and bruising. I was very uncomfortabl and anxious about post op so it contributed to my pain. I went to rhe ER because the pill form did not find helo my pain and my blood levels were realt off . Have been on IV getting potassium for the past two days ::/

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!
