Why in the world would people say such things. I feel great, better then I have in years. I won't tell you that you won't have a few bad days, but you might or you might not, everyone is different. Just ignore those people and keep your head up. Best of luck dealin with those type.

Those are ignorant people who are telling you that. I've only thrown up once since being banded, and it was my own fault for not chewing well enough. I've had food get stuck on 2 other occasions. So all in all, I've had 3 bad days (not even days, just a 15 minute period each time). Before the band, every day was a bad day because I was obsessed with food and ate myself into oblivion almost every night. I'm much happier since getting the band. It's like being set free after 25 years in prison. Stop discussing the band with people who are uninformed. Just tell them you've researched it, decided to do it, and you're not interested in their opinion.

wadew1976, people may be saying these things because they are thinking more about the bypass than the band. I have a great aunt that got the bypass a few years ago and I know she is constantly having problems. Anyway, just remember that you are doing this for you, and I wish you good luck!

Wade - First of all, Congratulations on making your decision to have surgery and doing something positive to get your health back. I've experienced what you are going through. Most of my family was supportive, but I have a sister who is a nurse and was completely against my surgery. I finally realized that her opinion was not only un-wanted, but did not matter either. Only you can decide what is right for you.

Second - Always stop by here for support if you need it. There's a lot of good people here. But also surround yourself at home with people who support and most importantly RESPECT your decision.

Best of luck!

People who are uninformed and have no idea what they are talking about should'nt speak on such topics unless they are inquiring information. I am not looking foward to educating ignorant people on the facts of the Lapband over and over and over. I feel like I want to make copies of the booklet my Dr. gave me and hand them out as I apporach people, then say "okay now what questions and/or comments do you have"? I tried to keep it a secret but the cat got out of the bag (I told one person in my family). I will be facing everyone this weekend for the first time, my son's graduation...not really looking foward to it, but I guess I have to face it some time. Lets stay strong! They just don't know wha they are talking (thinking) about.

I agree with everyone else. People don't know what's involved with lap band surgeryand don't know the difference between it and gastric bypass. I have had a few people saying negative things and trying to be the food police when they see me eating something that they "think" I shouldn't be. But I have luckily had more support than negativity. I cannot educate all the ignorant people in my family/at work and trying to correct them constantly is nerve racking. I have just learned to ignore the negativity and focus on myself and what my surgeon's office says. Although it can be hard, I am not letting a bunch of ignorant folks sidetrack me. I have also started attending my local support group for weight loss surgery which has been very beneficial. I have an aunt and couple of cousins (who, by the way, would all qualify and need the band themselves) who are the main negative people in my life. Instead of acting ignorant, they should be asking me about my experience so that they can have it too. I think some folks also act and say ignorant negative things because they are jealous.

That is exactly why I am not telling people at my work. Only my husband and adult children know and I have no intention of telling anyone else. It is humiliating to me that I have not been able to control this portion of my life. I have control over everything else - but not this eating thing.

I agree that many are misinformed and that is part of why they say the things they do.

This is EXACTLY why I've told only four people, my parents (and so far my mom's keeping her mouth shut), my DH and a friend who was also thinking of the band. I have had to have my date changed, and I may not tell her about the updated date. Though she checks in here from time to time, so she may see it (if so, hello!).

I plan on not ever telling people. If I am successful and lose weight with the band as I plan to be, then I will merely say it's been a combination of exercise and Portion Control that has helped me to lost weight. I've been fortunate that I've jumpstarted my weight loss and have lost a little over 40# already before being banded, so if I continue to lose, no one will say anything.

You guys are awesome! Thanks for being there for me. I would have thought my friends of most my life wouldnt be so stupid about this but i say screw them! I too am a little embarrassed i got so fat and have issues controlling my food. I have people say why dont u just work out? Why cant you just stop eating? People who have never been heavy say i dont get it? Well everyone has their own addictions and mine is food! Im not gonna let them discourage me. I appreciate all the support and thanks for listening to me. I know a lot of people dont understand the difference with lap band but some people do and still are ignorant about it. This is a big step for me and I have been so depressed for so many years that its time to make a change before my life passes me by!

I really did not tell many people before my surgery.....most people don't know what it really is about and they just don't get it. I was so scared before my surgery...I had alot of negative stuff in my head and was afraid to die and all that jazz. It is so easy and they give you good pain meds so take it. The most pain I had was from the gas. Get some gasX and a heating pad, that will help alot with the gas pain. Stay away from negative people and don't worry about the surgery you will do great!!

I've only told four people about me being banded because I don't have the patience to deal with negative comments and ignorant "holier than thou" personalities regarding their summation of MY choice.

I'm not concerned that their judgmental attitudes would upset me. Rather, I'm afraid I would hafta kick their judgmental asses for postulating to me that I have taken "the easy way out" and have not lost weight the "correct way".

It was just WAY easier to keep it to myself. I mean, were I to make a personal decision to have a hysterectomy, get a tattoo, have breast augmentation, or get a mole removed from my left butt cheek, I wouldn't spout that to the world, either.

Just my two cents......

The past doesn't matter, you are doing somthing about it now. I didn't tell anyone because I didn't want to hear everyones little opinions. Now they call me the incredible shrinking woman at work. And they say " see less of you tommorrow." when I leave for the day. Don't sweat it. you'll have the last laugh.

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL
