what to order in a restaurant.. Should I even go?

Recommended Posts

So my mom and I and some of my moms friends are going out to eat at the Loveless Cafe... Southern food, I think. I've always wanted to go out to eat at this place, I shoulda gone before my surgery.

So I'm thinking just getting an egg and ham? Surgery date was 4 December 2014. I'm on "soft" food. Able to eat 1/2 cup of food in one meal.

But can I eat mashed potatoes? Or grits? Country ham? The menu on the website is not very helpful. I don't know how the restaurant prepares the food, so I have no idea... I'm thinking I should just stay home and let them go.

Any suggestions would be helpful.

Can't go wrong with Soup, pudding or just Water.

I did mashed potatoes the first few times I went out to a restaurant.

I had a crab cake on Christmas eve. It wasn't very big but I got in about 3/4 of it. Then for the main meal I ordered broiled sole and basically could only eat one bite. I also had a teaspoonful of creamed spinach and about 2 tablespoons of deep fried onions. It was good; I was very full.

If I were you I'd do a search on Loveless Cafe nutrition in Google and pick something low in calories. I do this all the time when I go out to eat at a restaurant. You may have to search a little but it's there. I found it under Myfitnesspal.com.

I just spent a week eating at restaurants for dinner and sometimes lunch while on holidays. As I was with my family I would let the 3 of them order and I would take some of the Protein options and put on a small plate for me. My husband would always try to choose a option that I would enjoy mainly a fish option.

So we went to Loveless and had to wait an hour and a half!!! That's ridiculous, then I went to the restroom and passed through the kitchen, they had these big friers, frying chicken and the SMELL made me loose my appetite. I ordered a scrambled egg, and hot Water to add to my instant oatmeal, but the waitress forgot my egg, and when I asked, she brought me this bright yellow (not 1 egg) goo that had butter slathered on it (when I ordered it, I asked the waitress to not put butter) anyways it looked worse than hospital cooked eggs, and the smell... Needless to say it was a bad experience. I don't think ima venture to a restaurant anytime soon.

I work in both Little Rock AR and Radcliff KY and every time I drive back and forth I stop at the Loveless cafe :-) I haven't been since surgery and will avoid it until I can enjoy a bite of a biscuit!

Yes I've been told as much at my support group, but my sense of smell has changed so much, I don't know if I could take another restaurant trip again, at least not for while.

I would stick to Soups. Don't let all the other food get in the way of your goal.

The problem I've found going out to eat is that you pay so much for a meal that you only have a few small bites of. I don't like leftovers at all so I throw them away and feel that I am wasting so much.

The loveless cafe portions are pretty big so unless you eat leftovers, I would pass on going for now.

I'm curious. What is it about leftovers you don't like? How in the world (and I don't mean this in a judgmental way at ALL) do you cook 1/4-1/2 at a time so as not to waste mounds of food?

I have a very hungry husband :-) he eats all the leftovers so I never waste anything! And he's 6'6 and 223 so soon I'll weigh less than him!! Woot!

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
