Eating is hard!

Recommended Posts

I used to love eating. I mean, I got myself to a point of needed surgery because I loved to eat too much. I'm 3 months post op and I get sick so frequently. I have read people posting about getting the slimes a few times. But I get them every other day or so and throw up multiple times. I've been careful to not eat too much but it seems to be related to what I eat. Except that sometimes I'm fine with a given food and other times it makes me sick. I had salmon one night for dinner and all was good so I took leftovers to work for lunch (measured out the 2oz) and I threw up 5 times after eating it.

I'm getting to the point where I want to go back to safe things that don't make me sick. Things like Protein Shakes and soft foods. My dietitian doesn't want us doing this but I'm starting to dread eating. Today I ate once (grilled shrimp from Benihana) and was sick for 2 hours.

Has this happened to you? What do you suggest?

Sorry to hear this.

I'm 19 weeks post-op and have never thrown up once.

Something seems wrong. Have you had any tests run, to see if your tummy is twisting sometimes, perchance?

I would also look at the single most important thing. It isn't what you eat , but how long you take to eat it. if that 2 oz of salmon took you less than 1/2 hour to eat then your just eating too fast. Try using a timer or watch take a small bite chew it to death then wait 5 minutes for your next bite.

@@Stevehud That's a great point that I didn't think about. It doesn't seem to be related to what I eat but I have noticed that it happens more if I'm distracted while eating (Christmas dinner with family, at a restaurant and talking, etc). A few weeks ago I went on a business trip and was terrified of getting sick in front of people I work with so I ordered very safe foods and ate very slowly and didn't get sick once. I frequently eat my food in less than 20 minutes. I guess I better get that timer out and start using it. Thank you so much for the suggestion.

You should still be taking 30 -45 minutes to eat. I have never gotten the slimes. The one and only time I threw up was just after surgery when I was still on ice chips. I swallowed a very large piece by mistake and it came right back up. I think I'm paranoid about throwing up because when I've had allergic reactions before it was always really bad. It would come out my nose and cause petechiae so I've just gotten into the habit of eating slowly.

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
