OMG!!!!!!!!

That is "my" 7-11! In fact, I'm drinking a capuccino from that store right now! We must've been pretty close neighbors, because I've been going to that 7-11 since 1978!

I grew up on cedar street behind what used to be the Bellview Baptist Church... We moved from there to the north part of Hurst in '79.

That is too funny, though.

B posted his pictures yesterday.

You are looking good mister!

Thank you, ma'am. I figured they were different enough to warrant posting. That thread is such an inspiration, I figured I should give back some. Besides, there are too few men posting pics there.

Okay...this is getting weirder by the post...before we bought my current "dream home", we lived on Cedar Street! Yes, behind Bellview Baptist!

If you tell me your house number was 725, I will faint!

He's general mills...I know Kellogg has all their cereals....

Seems to be Kellog's only - Did a quick search for Cap'n Crunch and Sugar Bear (Super Sugar Crisp), and didn't come up with anything relevant (although you find some interesting things under sugar bear - who knew???)

OMG - We lived at 645, so not quite the same house, but very close. I drove down there a few months ago, and that neighborhood has stayed very nice. The house we had looks almost the same as it did when we moved 27 years ago, but with better landscaping!

I used to ride to the 7-11, and there was a bike shop in the Val Oaks shopping center on the other side of Hurstview. That's where I got my first 10-speed as a teenager. There was also a popcorn place at the corner of Ridgecrest and pipeline that i used to ride to as well. God I loved their popcorn.

It is a very, very small world.

Yes, it is! Yeah, the bike shop was in there with Winnies Fish & Pets, which I loved! "The Poppin' Place" is still there and going stronger than ever...in fact my sis and BIL just opened a popcorn shop near Clemson in South Carolina based on that very store! I tried to go there today to buy some Christmas popcorn tins, but I couldn't even get near the parking lot it was so busy.

I used to love Winnie's! The barber shop where my grandfather used to threaten me with buzz cuts was there was well. You've seen my pics - I must have been a very bad boy over the years... It's amazing that the poppin' place is still going strong after all these years - it's been there for at least 30 years.

Do you remember when Santa used to be in front of the bank, and he would come in by helicopter and land in the parking lot?

For the first time in forever, I have actual giddy nostalgia for my young childhood ;)

Shame on me, but I'm not sure...Winnie's may STILL be there, but I just haven't paid attention even though I go past there every day. I work out at the Hurst Rec Center, so you know what I mean! Oh yeah, The Poppin' Place is amazing! My son still loves to go there in summer to get sno-cones.

I don't recall Santa and the helicopter! How could I have missed that? I'm assuming you are talking about the bank that was by 7-11 that is now an insurance agency? Bank of Texas, I think? My mom banked there forever.

I've always had giddy nostalgia for my childhood here...I LOVE HURST! The rec center, the pool, Redbud Park, riding bikes and skateboards everywhere....it was great!

Okay, we have officially hijacked this thread!

We have, but that's okay. Yep that bank - everybody banked there - it was also the swankiest place in Hurst - my mother's bridal shower was there, my baby shower was there. People partied at the bank ;)

I played with Google Street view - it's possible to actually take a virtual trip down memory lane. Sad to see the Baskin Robbins is gone (although that goddamned place has a lot to do with how and when I first started gaining weight (along with the poppin' place & the carmel corn). It also looks like the old skating rink is gone. Many pre-pubescent angst-filled memories along with it... I used to get totally effed up by the reverse-skate - I only went one way ;) . And from time to time I will still break out into the "hokey pokey". The wife, who is ten years younger, looks at me like I'm from another planet...

It was a great place. I don't know how many times the guys at the Arco station that turned into the Poppin' Place helped me get the chain back on my old Schwinn banana seat bike, or helped air up the tires. I still miss the old Buddie's Grocery store at precinct - it's now the office furniture place, i think. They had Cookie Monster Cookies that I used to beg my mom to buy. They even had a cookie monster cake one time (I didn't see the logical inconsistency at the time), and she got that for me for my birthday once. That much blue icing is a very, very, very bad thing. I still have a thing for Cookie Monster...

There was a couple who walked across the country in the late 70's. They walked down Cedar street - stopped at my house, rang the doorbell and asked for a glass of Water. I didn't believe them until I read the book.

I guess I should go to bed. Will have dreams of mid-70s Hurst & lollipop pedals...

G'night chicas...

On a final note, yes the Baskin Robins is gone and is now a beauty shop...and that whole strip is no longer hot pink. It was hot pink since the 70's and has just been redone this year.

But the skating rink is still there! And I remember, and LOVED, doing the hokey pokey there! My son goes there once in a while. Boy, if our parents knew even 1/100th of the crap that went on at that skating rink, they would have locked us up and NEVER let us go there again! I was a real rink rat, could skate like nobodys business...LIVED there. In fact, my ring tone on my cell phone is "Brick House" because of my skating memories at Skateland! My kids always bug me to get a new ring tone, but I refuse...it's been "Brick House" for years and years and years...phone after phone after phone! It's my trademark!

G'nite, B! Thanks for the trip down memory lane!

Okay, folks! I know this is like asking a fellow junkie to hold my stash so I won't get high again, but here goes:

I could be faster...

I could reduce my wind resistance...

I could increase my distance comfort (most important)....

Do I want aerobars?

I think I might...

<Shit...more toys! Err, umm..."TOOLS">

Areobars are on my list as are speedplays.

Get um.

And you two are killing me with your childhood stories. You know I'm right between the two of you in age and though I'm in Ohio, we share the skating thing, the banana seat bike thing and the pop corn store as an industry (who'd a thought that would've lasted?) thing.

I'm loving your hyjacked postings. Now if you start talking about having dated each other's friends or shared elementary teachers I'm going to die.

I just googled aerobars and there's a load of information on them out there....

hehehe...I can't wait to get Gloria (my bike) all fitted out with some new stuff.

I'm looking to join a gym for January and February where I can take up spinning. There's one between home and work, but it's $50 a month. That's a hunk of change in this single mom's budget but I think it will be well spent.

Thinkin' out loud.

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.
