When can you get back in the pool?

Recommended Posts

I haven't had my surgery yet and am still waiting for a surgery date. One thing I am concerned about is when I will be able to get back in the pool. I have been working really hard since the beginning of October and have almost lost 60 pounds already with diet and exercise. My exercise of choice is mostly Water aerobics, including a little lap swimming/finning. I am in the pool 3-5 times a week and feel so much stronger/better than I have in a long time. I am concerned that the wait to get back in the pool will be long, and that I will grow weak while I am waiting. Being as heavy as I am, that is a real concern for me! Does anyone know when you can get back in the pool? Even just for "water walking" and nothing else?

Thanks!

@@heynowkc Lol I was gonna say wow you really want to get in that pool!!!! I would say probably at least a couple weeks, you want all your incisions to be completely healed shut!

If I remember correctly it was 4 weeks before I could submerge in Water. But your surgery team will let you know! Congrats on your pre-surgery weightloss! Good luck!

yeah, sure ;)

don't worry about it

we won't kick you out of the pool yet

all docs give different answers to the same questions

always only listen to YOUR doc

your stiches do need to heal first

whatever he tells you about when to swim

all future questions - listen only to him (or me too of course  )

you have been doing wonderful pre-op :)

exercise, diet etc - thats the way to do it!!!

I can "feel it in my bones ;) ) that you will continue to do wonderful with your weight loss, pre-op and post op :)

getting your early jump start - loosing 58 lbs!!!! :)

the more weight you loose now

the less you have to loose post op

you'll be ahead of the game :)

keep up the good work for the rest of your healthier, happier, longer life :)

good luck bud :)

I asked about my hot tub and was told 6 weeks, don't know if it's the same as a public pool.

I had my 3 week post op check yesterday and I was told to wait until 6 weeks post op too :( I can't wait to be able to swim again. It is worth having a discussion with your surgeons office to see what their recommendation is.

It really does vary surgeon to surgeon. As dedicated as you are they may clear you to start swimming again sooner than what others are reporting, but whatever your surgeon says, I'd stick to it.

An option they may give you is to use opsites (clear, waterproof bandages) to cover your incision sites a few weeks post-op. It's worth asking about.

Thank you all for your kind responses. I haven't even had surgery yet and am already eager to get back in the pool afterward. I will definitely mention it to my doctor tomorrow and find out what he usually recommends. I am sure it is different for everyone!

Thanks guys!

Your attitude is amazing and I have zero doubts that you will be a poster child for sleeve surgery, and able to achieve everything you dreamed of.

Wow thank you! I hope you're right! I feel so energized right now and I feel like I owe it all to the pool! Who knew swimming laps in circles could be so rewarding? Haha.

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
