Ooo I'll have a look at that website, :)

Well now I'm even more confused about what is better a sleeve or bypass..... My aunt brought over a friend who has had the sleeve and has lost 50 kilos..... I guess I'm worried with the bypass about the connecting of the small intestine to. The stomach bypassing everything I don't want issues with Constipation :/

I have had no issues at all with the bypass. You have to decide what is best for you. People tend to lose more weight with the bypass because it is both restrictive and malabsorptive. Your small stomach fills faster so you eat less, same as the sleeve. That's the restrictive part. Malabsorption means you absorb less from what you do eat, since your stomach is connected farther down your intestine. I wanted that part to deal with my diabetes and it worked. You also get less of the hormones that make you hungry. I had a problem getting enough Water at first but once I got in the habit, the slight Constipation cleared right up. My strategy was to drink apple cider, diluted with water, and V8 juice. If you drink plenty of water and follow the post surgery diet carefully, constipation shouldn't be a problem.

Ahhhh okay :) well I have a juicer... I would be able to juice up veggies and fruit whilst I'm on fluids yeah???? Or not???? How much Water is needed straight after surgery like when I get home???? The thought of having a sleeve and my whole remaining stomach removed scares me more than. The bypass but yeah I worried about Constipation and being deficiemt in Vitamins etc.... Sorry to ask so much I just get so many diff people with diff answers and start to stress...

Hi there,

I had my surgery on Nov 18, 2014. We are pretty close. To date I have lost almost 30 pounds. I have to be truthful as I feel as if I made a bad decision having the surgery. My family tells me it's only because it's the holidays and that I should have waited until after. Probably true. I am walking about 1 1/2 miles a day and need to start weight training. I used to love working out and am looking forward to getting into it again. I am already off 2 of my diabetes medicines and my high blood pressure medicine. Gotta love that.

Are you on the pureed portion step? I just started soft foods and am loving it. Are you having trouble getting your Protein in? I manage my Fluid, but still have trouble with Protein. So what are you doing and how are you feeling? I found that the first few weeks were the hardest.

I forgot to say that I had a lapband put in, in 2009. The band slipped and Dr. said that I needed to go with the bypass. So I started at 300#. Am now at 264#.

Hi: I'm not recent, actually had done in February of 2014. I like most, didn't tell anyone except for immediate family. Most folks don't seem to understand, and my family except for husband and kids, are not happy with it. I have had some complications. Almost immediately after I wasn't able to take in fluids or foods. It took until May to discover the real problem which was adhesions. And then in October, they found 3 hernias one being a Peterson hernia. Even, with all the complications I wouldn't change a thing. I would do it all over again. I'm not even a year out, and I'm down 137lbs. Good luck on your journey, and if you ever need to talk we are all here for you. ❤️

I am also almost a year out from ryn surgery.. Feb 2014 was my surgery date. Don't let all of the articles scare you. I also read the story of them losing their teeth.. i almost backed out but my surgeon reassured me that cases like that are extremely rare.

I had alot of pain after the surgery but i also had a rather large hernia repaired at the time of my bypass. Plus i think my tolerance to pain is very low. Walking helps even though you really don't want to move.. get up and walk!

Practice sipping your Water and not drinking with your meals..that was my biggest struggle . It does get easier.

hair loss.. it's not like you will go bald. You may be the only person that notices it. Protein helps this from being too excessive. It will grow back!

Constipation is a struggle but make sure you go every other day at least. I took maylox as needed and stool softners daily. It wasn't that bad if you stay on top of it.

Your new pouch will tell you what you can or can not tolerate. Just be aware of the signs..might be a tight feeling or bloated feeling (at least that was for me) i still do not feel "hunger pains" but i try to eat my 3 meals a day.

My first three months were the hardest, but it's all a mental struggle and it does get easier.

I wish i had my surgery years ago when i first looked into it, it has been the best decision of my life.

My starting weight was 243, current weight 139. I'm loving life and all of the new things i can comfortably take part in.

The articles will drive you crazy as will the scale. Don't compare your weight loss to others that have had the same surgery. Your body will lose the weight when it's ready. Oh and take measurements before surgery so when the scale isn't moving your inches will be.

I'm here if you need to chat

Best wishes

I really wonder where some of these scare stories are coming from. Teeth falling out? Sounds bogus to me. Maybe if you completely ignored your surgeon and nutritionist...even then, I'm betting something else was going on.

So many problems go away when you lose 50 or 60 pounds, it's hard to imagine life not being better than before surgery. I would absolutely not be influenced by some scare story from the Internet if your doctor tells you not to worry about it. After all, everyone is different, and your doctor knows YOU. Don't worry about anything unless he tells you it's a concern. And do ask him anything that's on your mind. That's his job.

Attitude makes a tremendous difference in your health, and stress is a known killer. Do whatever you need to do to reduce your stress, and don't look for things to worry about!

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I had about 6 months between deciding to do surgery and getting scheduled. I came across the book The Pound of Cure by Dr. Matthew Weiner, a bariatric surgeon in Arizona, and started to implement some of the changes he recommended (and lost 13 lbs in the process without ever feeling deprived). The book is very simple, and the focus is on whole, plant based foods, but within reason. It's not an all or nothing approach, or going vegan or something, but focuses on improvement and aiming for getting it right 80-90% of the time. His suggestions are divided into 12 sections that you can tackle over time, perhaps one per month for a year if a person is just trying to improve nutrition and build good habits. They range from things like cutting out artificial sweetener or eating more beans to eating a pound of vegetables per day. I found it really effective pre-surgery and it's an eating style I will be working to get back to as I am further out from surgery and have more capacity. Small changes you can sustain will do the most for building good habits for life.

That sounds awesome. I'll have to check that out thanks!

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
