I might be getting a cold and my breast reduction surgery is tomorrow morning

Recommended Posts

I have a stuffy nose and a scratchy throat. These symptoms are common for me when I have allergies as well as when I have a cold. I will definitely inform the intake nurse about my symptoms when I arrive at the hospital tomorrow. Do you think they will cancel the surgery?

@@IcanMakeit

sorry you are dealing with scratchy throat et al

from what i've seen and heard here

as long as you don't have a fever

doc probably will go ahead with surgery :)

of course as we always say "all docs are different"

feel better

good luck :)

You are right to tell the nurse. After they take all of your vital signs (temperature, blood pressure. . .) and everything checks out, then they will probably go ahead with your surgery if things are normal.

I know you are excited and do not want to postpone your surgery. Let us know how it goes. :-)

I had a massive cold before my vertical sleeve surgery and the flu before my most recent plastics surgery and I'll be honest, I lied and told them I was fine. As long as your cold doesn't compromise your airway, it's not a big deal. I had a little bit of a cough during my recent plastics surgery and a runny nose before the sleeve, neither of which prevented me from breathing if I was unconscious and unsupervised. The issue occurs when you have a productive cough or Fluid in your throat that stops you from breathing when you're too doped up to wake yourself up and cough. This would only be an issue immediately after you are extubated and in recovery and even then they should be paying enough attention to both you and your monitors to recognize an airway issue. I am not overly confident in their observation skills, so if I had an illness that did produce junk in my throat and may compromise my airway, I would postpone surgery. Past that, they blast you with antibiotics during and after surgery, so a minor little cold is not a big deal in the long run and something that ideally if you do disclose no one is overly alarmist about it.

I have read of others having colds prior to surgery and as long as there's no fever you should be good to go.

I'd probably lie that I feel fine too & if they didn't pick up on anything after taking my vitals, go through with it.

The only thing is if the cold gets worse post- surgery, make sure you have enough antibiotics so you don't go septic (fever IS an infection). ;)

YOU first! Take care of YOU, & well.

I called my surgeon and talked to the anesthesiologist when she called me. They both said that they would check me in the morning and if by then my cold hasn't progressed to where I have a fever or chest congestion, then surgery can go forward.

Heal well.

Be kind to yourself and enjoy taking it easy for awhile. ;)

My surgery went well but my left breast showed signs of a hematoma. They kept me a couple of extra days. I'm going home sometime today. I am looking forward to it. My surgeon now says that I look great and she is no longer concerned about my healing. I definitely feel better, so she is probably right.

And guess what. I now have the breasts of a 30 year old. You don't know how stoked I am.

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
