Help! Can't stand Protein Drinks

Recommended Posts

I am still pre-op but was having a real hard time getting my Protein during liquid diet. I discovered Unjury chicken Soup flavored protein powder. I mix it in chicken broth and really love it. No protein powder taste at all.

I had these issues as well until a friend gave me ProtiDiet gel pouches to add to my water!!!! Changed everything! You can buy them online all over or on Amazon, 7 in a box for $12. Each pouch has 15 g of Protein, add two of them to a large jug with one Crystal Light pkg and even my husband said he can't tell it's a protein drink! The MangoPeach and tropical fruits are great. The Pink Lemonade was a nice break from TOO SWEET EVERYTHING because it has a nice tartness! Seriously a lifesaver for me! Plus......adding it to your Water getsyou Fluid intake as well as the protein so it's double dipping!

I am 8 days post op and am not getting nearly enough Protein. I was drinking Premiere but can no longer tolerate them. I sip at Isopur but really want something with substance. I have the unflavored protein powder by Pur but am tired of putting it in broths. I don't know what else to try and i have 2 more weeks of liquids to go! Any suggestions?

I know that all surgeons post-op instructions vary. Mine personally does not allow for pudding or cream of wheat, anything other than Protein drinks/smoothies, or broths/soups with NO chunks or noodles until you have had your two week post-op appointment. They do however give us some recipes for smoothies to try while on the Phase II diet, and tonight was the first time that I felt well enough to try something of a smoothie consistency. I will share this recipe as I am DELIGHTED with it, and it contains 27g of Protein which is nearly half of my daily requirement. Even my husband said "WOW, you're really sucking that down tonight!" Because its DELICIOUS!!!!

Recipe:

3 Ice cubes

1cup Skim milk (8 grams of protein)

1 individual container of low fat vanilla Greek yogurt (14grams of Protein)

1 sugar free vanilla Carnation Drink (5grams of Protein)

1/2 a banana cut into chunks

1/4 small chunks of mango

I blended mine in my Magic Bullet blended until smooth.....I hope someone can get some positive results from this like I have!!!

This is good to know! I have 2 days left on my 21 days of liquid only portion of the post op plan and the Protein drinks are so disgusting at this point! I've tried a variety of them as well. I'm going to look for this to keep on hand. Thank you!

Go get nectar chocolate truffle and and a product called PB2. One scoop of nectar and two tablespoons of PB2 powder in a shaker bottle. Tastes like a liquid Reese Peanut Butter cup a little thicker and no "Protein shake after taste" whatsoevr

I've read online that these shots actually aren't good for us, because it's the wrong sort of Protein and we don't absorb it well at all. I'd doublecheck with your doctor's office and ask if they think it's okay.

I will second the idea of the Syntrax Nectars. When I was new post-op, they are what got me through the Protein shakes. I just couldn't do anything creamy. But I got really sick of those a couple of weeks ago, and now I drink the Premiere Protein Shakes from Sams (even though they're creamy, I'm okay with them now). I really don't get a Protein taste from them.

I like the protidiet stuff as well, but sadly it relies on a lot of collagen and Gelatin for the "protein" which isn't metabolized by our bodies so best not to count on it as a major protein source.

Yes they New whey shots are mostly collagen. That's why it's listed first in the ingredients.

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.
