First week post-surgery

Recommended Posts

Monday - Surgery day- went fine. I had visitors in my room after that I don't even remember. Typical for me with anesthesia.

Tuesday - Also a pretty good day. Got down my 2 Protein Shots and some broth, got some lovely meds, not a bad day at all. I got sent home in plenty of time to vote and then crashed at home.

Wednesday - sucked monkey balls. Big, fat, smelly monkey balls. And all my fault. I got scared of becoming addicted to the liquid Lortab, so the only dose I took was at night before bed on Tuesday. That night got rough a little after midnight. Wednesday was worse. There is no name as vile as those I called myself for deciding to have this surgery, etc. I was afraid to take my normal meds, which they specifically said I could do, and though I did try to get a Protein shot down, I gagged and gave up. I don't know where all this came from, but I was just afraid of the Lortab.

Thursday - a repeat of Wednesday, magnified by 100. OhHolyMotherOfPearl! Fortunately, I had my first follow-up with the surgeon. I got the same lecture three times - well, more than three time, but by three people. I am taking the Lortab (OhGloriousDay!), and they said I can make the shakes with Water instead of the protein shots. I really can't get them down anymore. But the shakes are going well.

Friday - I woke honestly thinking I should go on back to work. Glad I didn't. My energy and stamina runs out far too early to survive the whole day at work. But a good day overall. HOWEVER - I feel empty inside, like I used to feel after a full day of fasting. Not just hungry, but empty. Gas continued working its way out - HEAVEN! - and I stopped the Lortab and took only Tylenol during the day. I did take Lortab last night, but just one dose as bedtime.

Today - Another good day. Haven't needed Lortab since last night, and not even much Tylenol today. The empty feeling inside isn't going away or getting better. I made one scrambled egg and managed to eat half, and I've had a little applesauce, not much, but some. That seems to have helped some.

I know, I know - its too soon for anything but Clear liquids. But I did it anyway, and it's been over an hour without any ill effects.

One question - how long does the gas last?

From what I understand, scrambled eggs aren't allowed for quite some time. I would urge you to stick to the post op diet. You aren't doing yourself any favors by pushing it. Complications can be SERIOUS if you don't do what your Dr. tells you to do. And you aren't going to get addicted to Lortab. I had two full liquid bottles after tonsillectomy and never had a single problem.

Gas pains in my shoulder left at the end of the 1st week post-op. The kind of gas that comes out the other end :o was incredibly bad for months. Gas production slowed the rest of the year, but I still have it on a daily basis. I AM THE SHAOLIN MASTER OF THE ONE CHEEK SNEAK!!! I didn't sn*tch the pebble from my master's hand... I made such a stinky he gagged and dropped the pebble.

Congrats on making it through surgery and having a good recovery.

I was sleeved Monday too and things went pretty well except big problems with nausea. My nursing team was great at encouraging me to use nausea and pain meds. Went home late Tuesday and pretty much stayed down Wednesday and Thursday. The minute I got home I realized Water was making me nauseous. I switched to herbal teas and all forms of nausea went away. I was up and around for 4 hours today and came home exhausted. I have an empty hungry feeling too. ONe thing that helped in powders?utm_source=BariatricPal&utm_medium=Affiliate&utm_campaign=CommentLink" target="_ad" data-id="1" >unjury chicken Soup flavored Protein. I can start full liquids Monday so I was sure to get and assortment of Soups at the store today. Only one dose painkiller today.

I didn't have any pain in the hospital. I didn't even need tylenol. I told them to take away the morphine pump cause I wasn't using it. I was walking in recovery and had no problem walking once on the floor. I went in Thursday and was sent home Saturday. Pain no worse than a menstrual cramp. Sunday I was gassy all day. No pain just lots of tooting. I agree with others, hold off on the scrambled eggs. Stick to your allowed food list. It's in your best interest.

I was sleeved on Nov 4th. Pain was very minimal. I only needed two doses of pain meds via the pump (dilaudin, due to allergies to the other painkillers) and one was after a bad bout with hiccups. I forced myself to burp knowing the gas was a factor in pain and it helped immensely. I was up walking laps in the hospital hallway within 3 hours after getting back to my room from recovery and it helped. I wasn't able to pass gas out the other end until the next day--don't know if it was psychological or just couldn't do it (I had it in my mind that I might poo my bed, even though I had nothing in my gut from eating). I had a vegetable broth the morning after surgery and that helped get the gas rolling out along with belching and walking more and more. I went home that next morning. Other than minor pain, which I haven't needed pain medication for, my biggest obstacle has been my sleep pattern. I was a belly and side sleeper and can't do either of those until everything is healed up.

On day 3 I was able to start integrating pureed cream Soup (lowfat) and light yogurt, and unsweetened applesauce. I have had no nausea whatsoever. I take 30 minutes to eat anything (which is basically just licking the spoon) and wait the 30 minutes to start drinking Water afterwards.

One thing I think helped is that the anesthesiologist gave me anti-nausea medication when they put me under, and the doctor gave me a prescription for omeprazole to cut down on stomach acid while the new tummy is healing. On day 7, I'm allowed to start integrating soft cooked scrambled eggs, and non-fat refried Beans.

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I had about 6 months between deciding to do surgery and getting scheduled. I came across the book The Pound of Cure by Dr. Matthew Weiner, a bariatric surgeon in Arizona, and started to implement some of the changes he recommended (and lost 13 lbs in the process without ever feeling deprived). The book is very simple, and the focus is on whole, plant based foods, but within reason. It's not an all or nothing approach, or going vegan or something, but focuses on improvement and aiming for getting it right 80-90% of the time. His suggestions are divided into 12 sections that you can tackle over time, perhaps one per month for a year if a person is just trying to improve nutrition and build good habits. They range from things like cutting out artificial sweetener or eating more beans to eating a pound of vegetables per day. I found it really effective pre-surgery and it's an eating style I will be working to get back to as I am further out from surgery and have more capacity. Small changes you can sustain will do the most for building good habits for life.

That sounds awesome. I'll have to check that out thanks!

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
