Protein Amounts

Recommended Posts

What amount of Protein should I be taking in at 4 months post op? I thought it should be 60-70 grams but I'm still losing lots of hair every day. Would love input.

Inner Surfer GIrl-- I had surgery in Mexico & back in Indiana now, I just see my family Dr for blood work now- I don't really have a program or anything to follow now. Kind of a lone wolf- lol!!

My daily limits are as follows:

Proteins 60 to 80 grams a day, but I stick closer to the 60 gram limit

Carbs no more than 100 grams a day

Fats no more than 30 grams a day, with at least 10 grams of "good" fats at one meal. (Olive oil, flax seed oil etc.)

As for hair loss, I've heard that it levels off at about 6 months post-op. I've got about another month and a half to reach that point.... I'll let you know.

Mayaresearchmom- thank you! I try to get in about 60grams as well but I was afraid it wasn't enough & contributing to my Hair loss. I hope I still have hair left in 2 months- I'm losing a lot each day & my hair is fine & thin to begin with. Ugh! I don't eat very many carbs but I probably need more healthy oils. I also bought a hair & nail supplement to see if it helps! Thanks for the info!

I'm 1year 4 month post op. My hair started thinning couple months out . It lasted for what seemed like forever. Last moth it almost stopped falling out. Got a good haircut. Much better. Surgery.is very stressful on the body. As your body adjusts it will stopped. And yes it will grow back. I'm on 80 g. Protein. Have a great day

Hi! My surgeon wants me to consume 80 grams of Protein daily. It has been tough since going to normal food. The shakes make 80 grams super attainable. I take Biotin daily to help with hair loss. I'm 11 weeks post op tomorrow, and am not losing hair, although I hear it happens at about the 3 month mark, so I'm probably going to lose some as well.

Since you are a lone wolf, you might get "The Big Book of Gastric Bypass." It has everything pre and post op you need to know. I read about it on this forum, so I downloaded it on my Kindle. I still refer to it.

My nutritionist said for life 60-80 grams for life because we will need it for "repairs" & sustained weight loss.

I have found that it gets easier especially since I am not craving carbs or sugar. Unlike before I ate way to many carbs & not enough Protein.

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
