ALMOST 2 WEEKS POST OP AND FEELING MAJOR REGRET

Recommended Posts

Hello all, I am almost 2 weeks post op and I have been somewhat sad. I had a rough first week, had a 2 day hospital stay because of a collapsed lung and fever. Since then I have been home recovering and I have gone through so many emotions. I have to cook for my family of 3 and that time is probably the hardest. I have been following the all liquid phase to the best of my ability. I am only able to get in ONE shake and the rest is Water about 40 oz daily. I tried an egg the other morning at the approval of my doc, but I wasn't too crazy about it and I felt extremely full afterwards. I thought I'll just stick to the liquids until I move on to the puree stage the doctors must know what they are doing.

I am worried I wont ever be able to eat a real meal again. I also think I should've done more and tried to lose it on my own although I had tried since I was 15 and I'm now 38. I keep hearing it gets better but right now I hate not being able to part take with my family at dinner time and I also dont like the way I'm feeling with the major restriction. Will I ever be able to eat somewhat normally again? I want this mental regret to go away. I have cried to my husband and thank goodness he is very supportive.

Any comments are welcome. Please tell me it gets better from here.

it does get better hang in there I had feelings of regret as well after my surgery being only 20 and having the surgery was not easy nor is it easy at any age. as for the restriction you will slowly be able to take in more but you always have to listen to your body and know when to stop. as for dinners try to just sit with your family and talk about your day make it more about conversation than food and soon you will be eating with them even if it is something different. you can do it and in the end I hope your regrets go away best of luck let me know if you have any questions :)

I've read so many different stories about this, and this is why it's so important to come to grips with your emotional attachment to food before surgery. That being said, I know that sometimes the excitement and the prospect of a thinner healthier version of yourself overshadows that reality. I urge you to go to support group meetings and possibly even talk with a bariatric counselor. You are not alone. My surgery is in December and I am trying hard to give myself all the mental pep talks I can, but I am also a realist and know that I won't fully understand what you're going through until I'm there. Kind of like single adults telling parents how to raise children lol

I am there with you. I am 9 days out, and faced similar feelings. I am on just liquids for 5 more days and have to cook for my family as well...and it's hard...but, I know that the first 6 months are when the weight loss occurs, so I have to remind myself that this very strict phase is temporary. On youtube there is a video a girl made of what she eats 2 years post VSG. Check it out, it will lift your spirits. Yes we will learn to eat differently and better (hopefully) but we will be able to enjoy food again. I think our bodies take a big hit with surgery, and then has limited nutrition to recover, so that affects you initially, too. My husband had RNY 2 years ago, and enjoys his meals very much. I think it's very normal to grieve an old lifestyle, it doesn't mean we won't be able to embrace the new one..but it takes time and support. Good you have your husband on your side, and seek out your bariatric meetings like someone else posted, that's what I'm gonna try too :)

Thank you all for your comments and well wishes. I will be seeking to visit a support group. I really do hope that it works.I didn't realize how attached I was to my food. I was always the happy cheery girl cracking jokes while cooking, stuffing my face etc. Now I'm like down in the dumps and depressed.

I will keep you all posted. Thanks again.

@@D.Lo another thing I'd like to share with you is something that I try to apply to all areas of my life and I hope to be able to apply this to my WLS journey as well. As a life coach I have used this as a way to work with my clients in the past. It's a quote by John Maxwell that says "Your attitude determines your altitude". Meditate on that for a moment. The future and how we perceive it is really in our own hands. Instead of saying "I really do hope that it works", say to yourself, "This will work for me because I'm going to make it work for me." It changes the whole dynamic of the negative thought process. Hope that helps!

Don't underestimate the roller coaster of emotions we go through as we approach and undergo surgery. THAT was the easy part. But, now is the fun part. Hang in there. It does get better. I am just about 5 weeks out and there is a world of difference. By no means a magic pill. Likely the hardest thing I will ever do. Stay hydrated. That will help. Hunger will oh away. Ask family to keep food out if sight as a kindness to you.

I'm so so sorry you had complications...It really does get better...as far as how you feel. i had complications too, almost died. I was bleeding internally and my blodd pressure bottomed out...had to have blood and emergency surgery to fix it...extended hospital stay. i got home and was just miserable...I am feeling SO much better now...but i have only lost 5 pounds...went through all that and I've lost 5 pounds!!!!! people tell me it's my body healing it's self......so I will continue doing what I'm supossed to do and wait.....what other choice do I have? You can't "un ring" a bell LOL, you will feel better. I have a long time online friend that had major complications and she is now at goal, looks great and no regrests...though she said she did at first. I think it might be a phase we all go though...hang tough

That feeling does get better. Totally normal and I'm now 3.5 years down the track. My only legacy besides a lot of weight gone, is I refuse to eat Soup, smoothies or anything like that! Your very very early days, give yourself some peace, it's a massive adjustment and In time you will adjust mentally and physically.

Preparation is good but practical day to day existence is another reality to live.

I'd encourage you to look over the veterans and other experienced areas to feel that reassurance that it you will adjust.

When you see some more weight moving and experience some of the positives in your life from that I suspect you'll feel more encouraged.

Take care and be kind to yourself.

Just an update for all. I am officially 3 weeks post op and I am happy to report I am ALOT better! The depression has subsided I didn't even visit the support group yet. I am so happy to say. I still have mental cravings....especially for cheeseburgers LOL but I am not down in the dumps at all. I am still on the full liquid diet for another week and then I progress to purees. I cook every day for my family and have been dealing with things very well. I just truly was not mentally prepared for the mourning of food that I experienced week 1& 2. That was the hardest thing I've truly ever had to deal with mentally. I have lost about 32 pounds in 3 weeks so all is well thus far. Have a great week and God bless.

2 days until I fly out to San Diego to have my Bypass Surg. in Tiajuana Mexico. Not gonna lie, the nerves are starting to surface. I don't fear the surgery itself, or the fact that I'm traveling alone, but its the aftermath that I'm stressing about the most, after this 8 week wait. I'm excited to finally be here, but I am really dreading the post surgical chapter. I know its going to be tough, real tough and I think I'm just in my head to much now that the day i here. Wish me luck, Hopefully I'm one of the lucky ones, and everything goes smoothly. Cant wait to give an exciting update,. If there is anyone else have a June bypass or even a recent one, Id love to have someone to compare war stories with. Also, anyone near San Antonio Tx? See ya soon with the future me. 💜

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.
