Nausea and Disgusted by Food

Recommended Posts

Hi All... I'm 3 weeks post-op and I can't keep food down. My 1st week post op seemed so much better than week 3. I placed a call to my surgeon of course, but I'm waiting for a response since it's the weekend. I love this forum because there is so much 1st hand information. Anyways... Week 2 and going on week 3 has been miserable. I can't stand the thought of putting anything in my mouth because of the nausea. I was prescribed an anti-nausea patch, but so far it hasn't worked. I'm just worried because what little I do try to eat won't stay down. I can drink Water, but even then I start getting nauseous. I'm not eating too fast either. I took two tiny tiny bites of yogurt this morning and it came up. I just feel so helpless. This is not what I wanted. I want balance and I want to feel healthy. I feel more u. nhealthy now than I did 30 pounds ago pre-op. I'm glad I've lost weight but this is not happiness. I would take back my 30 lbs pounds if it meant that I would feel good physically. Sure I was unhappy with my pre-op weight, but this nausea and physical starvation (not hunger) is making me feel so radically unhealthy and ill. I know everyone says it gets better... but I don't think I can stand much more of this. Do most people have this relentless nausea and disgust towards food? Please know that I'm not trying to be negative, but right now there are no positives. At this point the weight loss isn't worth it. I hope that one day it will be.

My daughter was sleeved about 7 weeks ago, first 2 weeks were not bad at all...than the nausea and came, she says she could drink liquids except for Protein Shakes which made her nauseous..the small amount of food that she was taking in was digesting but she had alot of musous frothy secretions that would have to come up and then basically was dry heaving, long story short this went on with several meds trying to help th enausea and reflux type symptoms and ;ast week ended up back in the hospital with her surgeon going in for a exploratoy lap and found a hiatal hernis, which he repaired, she has been home since friday and still feels nauseaous at times but the spitting constantly has subsided..she says the same as you, this is not what she wanted at all...i tell her it will get better because myse had gastric bypass in 1999 and did fine after the first month..i am just praying that her body has to heal from 2 surgeries in 7 weeks time...good luck to u hun..will pray for u as well

I had my surgery back on June 17, 2014, and did fine the first two months, but I have never really gotten my appetite back. I feel like I have to force myself to eat, even though I crave a lot of different foods, when it comes down to getting ready to eat I just don't want to. Since I don't really eat much, my Protein intake is low, so I feel lethargic and lack strength. To add to my situation, I am dealing with heart issues, I got pneumonia and it threw my heart out of rhythm (atrial fibrillation), so I am having trouble with shortness of breath so I don't exercise like I should. Have an appointment with my cardiologist on Tuesday and hoping to get some answers.

Hey everyone, I'm 2 weeks post op and I'm beginning to experience the same trouble. I'm not vomiting, but I become very nauseated with the thought of putting anything in my mouth. This started 4 days ago. I'm not able to get my meals in and over the past 5 days I've spent so much money on things that I can't consume. I am able to drink Water but that's about it. I'm feeling so disgusted and my energy is slowly fading because I'm not able to get in my Protein. I'm scheduled to see my Bariatric Coordinator on Friday and I can't wait. I'm also not able to take my Vitamins. I definitely don't know what to do. I started puree today and I could only eat 1 baby spoon of my meat.

Guys my sense of smell has also intensified. The smallest odor to others seems huge to me and it makes me nauseous. I don't like the way my husband smells either OMG! He smells horrible to me and I don't even know how to tell him without hurting his feelings. This is so crazy to me right now.

I am also at two and a half weeks post op and having the same problems. Hard to drink and eat. Feel so weak all the time. Hoping this will get better. Every time I take Vitamins I get sick. Yuck!

I am now almost 6 weeks post op, and I can't get any food in. I can barely keep liquids down. I was already hospitalized once for dehydration. My doctor prescribed me a Water pill to hopefully help with some of the swelling. It hasn't helped at all so far. I'm freaking out a bit. At this point I am down 48 pounds. This is not the healthy way at all.

Hi, I'm going on week 3 and my Biggest problem is the feeling of wanting to Burp and Indigestion which keeps me up at night. But I'm glad you called the Dr because I really don't think that should be happening to you. Hang in there I hear it gets Better.

I found that I couldn't stomach the milk in Protein Shakes post sleeve. I tried 1%, non-fat, and even Lactaid (thinking I had become lactose intolerant). What worked for me was to mix my Protein Powder with Water. Good luck with it. I think just trying different things should help.

Very curious to know if the nausea has gone away for you guys that posted. My surgery is 12/31/14 and I would really like to hear that you all are doing much better and that it was a phase.

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
