Pre-op Liquid Diet Question

Recommended Posts

Hi All

I'm a newbie to this board and this is my first posting. I'm scheduled for my sleeve surgery on 22 October and I have a question about the pre-op diet. I've had a search through the various diet posts but may have missed an answer to my question, so apologies if this has been asked many times before!! :)

I started my liquid diet on Monday past, so nearly 2.5 weeks prior to the surgery. And whilst I'm not having a problem stomaching the shakes or Soups, the constant hunger is driving me spare and all I'm thinking about is how hungry I am and when I can next consume something.

So my question is - am I not having enough shakes/soups during the day?? I'm having one for breaky, one for lunch and for dinner. But I'm so hungry, I'm supplementing with lettuce, carrot sticks and a bit of steamed chicken at lunch or dinner. And I know this is a no-no and I really want to make the best effort in the lead up to the surgery.

Is just the three a day the norm or would I be better employed adding an additional Meal Replacement in there?? I am following my Breakfast shake with some nectar Protein in Water, but unfortunately, I think I picked the worst tasting one, so struggle to get that one down. Not for any other reason than it tastes like Juicy fruit chewing gum!! Was never a fan of that anyways! And I really want to do the best I can with this - I've already cooked up a storm with various Soups to consume afterwards at the different stages of recovery ie broth for the first week, pureed for week or two after than, mushy type ones beyond. I don't want to fail before I even get started!

I'd really appreciate the advice of those that have been there and done it all. I am telling myself that each day it will get better, but I'm still as hungry all day as I was five-six days ago.

Thanks for taking the time to read and reply.

Cheers

RozzieJ

Hi there, I am in the middle of my 14 day liquid preop diet as we speak, (10/20 is my big day) and I have 8 oz ones for the main three and 3 4 oz ones for Snacks. I have to use the Bariatric Advantage ones that I add sugar free Torani Syrup to so I don't get so bored with them. I can also have a cup of specific veggies with lunch and dinner and thats it. Hope this helps! I would check with your dr office/ nut and see what they say?

Luckily my doctor has liquid and Protein Bars with a low calorie, low fat dinner. He said that patients are more compliant with this plan. My dietician (recommended by surgeon) has a more inclusive diet. With all this being said, the purpose of the pre-op diet is to shrink your liver and prepare your body. Talk to your doctor about modifications.

My suregon requires you to use Optifast 800 Meal Replacement. I have to consume total of 8 per day (base on my BMI of >50). 1 can be a Soup, 2 can be bars for first 12 days. The rest of drink shakes. No real food at all.

I would call you NUT, they are better to advise you. Oct 20 is my date TOO sweetcheeks!

Oct 20th is my date too :-) I'm hungry on the pre-op diet as well. I'm allowed a shake for b'fast & lunch & for dinner I'm allowed a palm size piece of lean Protein & the specified vegies. I can snack on carrot sticks etc & have become a drinker of black tea in the last week, having about 3 cups a day which helps a little with the hunger. Ring the surgery & ask if there's anything else your allowed.

Definitely talk to your surgeon or their support staff. Every pre-op diet is different. I could have 4 shakes per day plus yogurt, sugar-free popsicles, etc. I had about 1100 calories per day and I didn't feel hungry most days. But I wouldn't do anything without checking with your doctor's office first.

Thanks Sweetcheeks!! Luckily, my body seems have given up begging me for food and only really grinches when it's really hungry. So that's a good little win!

Good luck to everyone who is being sleeved on the 20th. Next Wednesday cannot come quick enough for me!!!

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
